NBC/Peacock
Amazon Prime
NBC/Peacock
Peacock

What the Spurs have to say about gaining more national media attention

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) looks to pass to guard De’aaron Fox (4) in the third quarter as the Spurs take on the Suns on Thursday night, Feb. 19, 2026 in the first of two “I-35 Series” games in Austin at the Moody Center.
AUSTIN — In the past 10 days, the NBA has announced its TV partners plan to air national broadcasts of five additional Spurs games.
It’s been welcome news for Spurs fans eager to see the team receive more media attention in the midst of what’s been the franchise’s best season in years.
“We’re so back,” @aggiefood said last week on X.
But for the players, the announcements have largely gone unnoticed.
“I’ll be honest, I didn’t even know that. I think if you asked a bunch of us, we didn’t know either,” forward Julian Champagnie said when asked about the additional broadcasts by network heavyweights such as ESPN and NBC.
“But it’s cool. Being featured is cool,” Champagnie added after shootaround in preparation for Saturday night’s game against Sacramento at Moody Center. “It makes us know we’re doing something right. But it doesn’t really matter. TV, no TV, going to get another ‘W’, that’s the whole goal.”
Since Feb. 11, the NBA has announced that the following home games have been picked up by its TV rightsholders:
- March 10, Boston, NBC/Peacock
- March 14, Charlotte, Amazon Prime
- March 23, Miami, NBC/Peacock
- March 30, Chicago, Peacock
- April 8, Portland, ESPN
All five games will still be available as local telecasts on FanDuel Sports Network, the Spurs said.
With generational talent Victor Wembanyama as the face of the franchise, the Spurs started off the season with 22 of their games scheduled for national TV. But with Wembanyama and Co. doing so well — they ranked second in the Western Conference with a 39-16 record entering Saturday’s game — a total of seven more such contests have been added.
Like Champagnie, center Luke Kornet was unaware of the broadcast changes, the last of which was announced Friday after the Spurs clobbered the Suns 121-94 on Thursday night in Austin for their seventh win in a row.
“It’s just kind of a testament to the success we’ve had so far,” Kornet said.
The ninth-year pro is used to being on national TV after signing with the Spurs this past summer following his stint with the high-profile Boston Celtics. He believes playing in front of a national audience provides players with some “added energy.”
“(That) kind of stuff comes along with it as you are able to be successful, but you’re not really doing it for that motive,” he said. “So, we kind of acknowledge that for what it is, but we have a long way to grow. That’s kind of where our head’s at.”
