Knicks’ plan for Jeremy Sochan might impact rookie Mo Diawara’s progress

Knicks head coach Mike Brown has a plan for newly signed Jeremy Sochan, and it might come at the expense of promising rookie Mohamed Diawara.
The Knicks were back to practice on Wednesday following the All-Star break, and the coach commented for the first time on the addition of Sochan, the 2022 top-10 pick of the San Antonio Spurs, who was released last week and signed by New York in the buyout market.
While talking about Sochan, Brown was asked how his arrival might impact Diawara, the second-round pick who has earned a rotation spot as of late due to solid play and injuries.
This is what Brown had to say:
“Mo’s had a good season so far. As a young guy… and, as you guys know, I’ll play young guys. I have played young guys in front of vets before. But I’m going to give Jeremy an opportunity,” he said. “It’s similar to Tyler (Kolek). Jose (Alvarado) is a vet. He knows the league and the league knows him. He knows the officials and vice versa. At the end of the day, I’m going to play who I think is best for us.”
Brown didn’t commit to Sochan permanently being a fixture in his rotation. He didn’t even commit to how much Sochan will play. He did, though, strongly indicate that Sochan will get the minutes that have recently gone to Diawara as the coach prepares to find out who and what lineup combinations are best for the roster, with the postseason soon approaching.
Sochan, who was glued to the bench most of this season in San Antonio, is a 6-foot-8 forward who, because of his frame, could be used to guard multiple positions, which was appealing to Brown and the front office. Sochan has also played point guard in the past. However, his poor 3-point shooting and fouling have been issues throughout his young career, and Brown will have to be intentional about which players he pairs alongside Sochan in his limited minutes.
The 6-foot-9 Diawara has surprised everyone, including the Knicks’ front office, this season. He’s had some good defensive flashes as of late and is shooting the 3-ball at a 40-percent clip, albeit on low volume. The rookie has earned his playing time with impressive moments over the last several weeks.
Sochan’s profile as a defender is currently higher than where Diawara is in his process. New York has also been a rollercoaster defensive team this season. There was a 10-game stretch where it was one of the worst defenses in the NBA and a 10-game stretch where it was the best defense in the NBA. The Knicks are likely going to be fine scoring the ball going forward, so an emphasis on stabilizing the defense and finding lineups that might work appears to be at the forefront, with the additions of both Alvarado and Sochan supporting those thoughts.
After being released by the Spurs, Sochan said he had offers from several teams. He chose New York after a conversation with Brown. Part of what appealed to Sochan was the ability to have a fresh start, learn from the veterans on the roster and compete for a title.
Sochan said that nothing was promised to him by the Knicks’ front office before he signed, but he does believe that he carries qualities that can help the team if given the opportunities.
“(I bring) energy,” Sochan said during his introduction on Wednesday. “The kind of mold that the coach wants, has been doing and what the Knicks have been doing. I think I can really excel in. Versatility. Defense. Energy. I bring a little bit of nasty. I can’t wait.”
In adding Sochan and Alvarado, New York did add some more grit, if you will, to the roster for its postseason push. And hearing Brown speak about it, that certainly felt intentional.
“Anytime you can add that to your team, you add it to your team, especially if they bring other things to the table,” Brown said. “Jose brings a level of quickness with the basketball that we hadn’t had. Jeremy brings, at that size, an ability and knack for rebounding and getting out in transition. He can handle the ball. Even in San Antonio, they tried to play him at the point guard position a little bit.”
It appears Brown will be running a Sochan experiment for the next few weeks, as he tries to learn if the forward can help the team reach its goal of a championship. The biggest concern in this perceived scenario is Sochan not working out while Diawara loses the momentum he’s built. With that, it’ll be crucial for the coaching staff to know when to pull the plug if the Sochan experience isn’t going well, and Diawara will have to stay prepared and engaged.
It felt unlikely that either player was going to be a lock for the postseason rotation, but Brown is going to spend the last 27 games finding that out for certain.
