Wembanyama, road-weary Fox ready to represent Spurs at All-Star Game

San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama talks to reporters during the NBA All-Star basketball game media day Saturday, Feb. 14, 2026, in Inglewood, Calif.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Spurs center Victor Wembanyama viewed the injury-replacement selection of teammate De’Aaron Fox to the All-Star Game through a better-late-than-never lens.
“I would’ve liked to and I think we should have” had two Spurs in the game from the start, Wembanyama, a starter for the first time after earning a reserve nod last season, said Saturday.
“I think the general opinion is we should have (had two). But, no, I’m happy for him, for sure. I hope he will still be able to get a few days rest.”
After taking an early morning flight from San Francisco, where the Spurs played Wednesday night in the second game of a road back-to-back, to Texas, Fox was just 20 minutes away from his home in Houston on Thursday when he learned NBA commissioner Adam Silver had tabbed him to replace injured two-time league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“I was driving from San Antonio to Houston on three hours of sleep when I got the call,” Fox said. "But it is cool. It’s always an honor, obviously, seeing the work you put in and the position our team is in (rewarded), so it’s great. And then it’s even better having our entire coaching staff here, having Vic and Steph (Castle), Carter (Bryant), Dylan (Harper). We have so many guys here.
“So, for me, it was definitely cool getting that nod and being able to be here with a lot of my guys.”
Fox’s selection made him an All-Star for the second time in his nine NBA seasons after he was selected as a reserve while playing for Sacramento in 2023. He’ll be playing for the Stripes team guided by Spurs coach Mitch Johnson on Sunday at Intuit Dome in the new round-robin “U.S. versus the World” format.
Asked if he planned to give his teammates any tips on defending Wembanyama, Fox didn’t hesitate.
“I’m not telling them (expletive),” he said. “I don’t want to win this game that bad where I’m going to give Vic stuff away. No, absolutely not.”
One person who does want to win badly — just as he did last year — is Wembanyama.
“That comes from the fact I’ve seen the All-Star game and it hasn’t been competitive," the 22-year-old Frenchman said. "I’ve always thought if I was in there, I’m never stepping onto the court to lose or not caring. Just like at home, I’ll never step into a board game not caring or thinking I’m going to lose. If I’m going to be out there, I might as well win.”
Wembanyama even has a plan for how he’s going to get his teammates to share his serious approach.
“I think exclamation point plays, playing in a solid manner, and sharing the ball with energy,” he said. “If you share that energy, people feel like they have responsibility to share it back to you. So I’m confident.”
As for Fox, he was still trying to get up to speed on how everything is going to work Sunday.
“Funny enough, I wasn’t paying attention and I had to learn the format when I got the call,” he said. “They want to make it more competitive, and I think a lot of times in the years past, if it was a close game, the last five minutes you started to see it get competitive. So we’ll see. We’ll see. I don’t know. (Wembanyama) said if he’s playing, he’s going to play play. So, like I said, we will see what happens when we go out there. I can’t speak for everybody.”
As for Johnson, he indicated at a recent pre-game media session he hopes Wembanyama doesn’t go too crazy.
“I think there can be a level of competitiveness and playing hard that can strike a balance in a game like this, where it doesn’t feel like maybe it’s too unserious,” he said. "I don’t know what that balance is. The players have to be the one to set the tone in a situation like that. They’ve also earned the right to set that tone, whatever that tone might be. Those guys are there during a break for everyone else. It’s a lot of time and a lot of sacrifice to be there. I think they all are deserving to be able to voice whatever that experience should look like.”
