Victor Wembanyama’s hot first half pushes him past Tim Duncan, into NBA record books

LOS ANGELES — When the Los Angeles Lakers planned to show some Wilt Chamberlain highlights during the first quarter break Tuesday evening, they couldn’t have anticipated the irony. These segments are scheduled in advance, with some intention of genericism to make the videos relevant, regardless of what’s happening on the floor.
But just a few minutes earlier, Victor Wembanyama was having a Wilt Chamberlain moment.
The third-year center scored 25 points in just eight first-quarter minutes, a period-long masterpiece of Picasso-esque proportions. Wembanyama’s 25 points in the opening frame were the most by any San Antonio Spurs player in a single period in the play-by-play era, per Stathead. He is also the first player in that era to score 25 points in under eight minutes.
He made it clear from the opening tip that he wanted to prove a point against a Lakers team resting their starters. He played with a ferocity that usually takes over games against full-strength opponents. Wembanyama said that he needed to prove to himself and to the team that they can beat anyone, good or bad.
Now, the Spurs have responded to the roughest patch of the season with some consistency and their first five-game winning streak since December.
“These kinds of games, you got to have the greed,” Wembanyama said after the Spurs beat the Lakers 136-108. “Every game, you have to have this greed, to want more every time. Because, at all times, it doesn’t matter who is on the court, there is somebody who is going to want to stop you from doing what you do out there. So you gotta be greedy.”
The All-Star starter finished the first half with 37 points, surpassing Tim Duncan for the most points in a half by a Spur in that span. It was also the most points in a first half in the NBA this season. He cooled off in his brief second-half stint and finished with 40 points and 12 rebounds, the sixth 40-point game of his career.
Wembanyama joined Sleepy Floyd and Patrick Ewing as the only players to score 40 points in under 27 minutes, per The Athletic’s Dan Woike.
“He’s one of the five best players in the world,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “He’s put that stamp on himself. He’s one of one as a human.”
Before they knew it, the Spurs had their fourth 30-point lead of the season and went back to the locker room up 84-55. Wembanyama went to the locker room 13 points shy of his career high of 50. Meanwhile, Spurs rookie Carter Bryant had a new scoring career-high of 14 points, all in the first half. After falling out of the rotation briefly earlier this season, Bryant has hit his stride heading into his appearance in Saturday’s NBA dunk contest.
For all the ups in this game, there was one down with Stephon Castle. After a massive block at the summit on Rui Hachimura, Castle crashed to the ground and suffered a pelvic contusion. His X-rays were negative, according to a team source, but he spent a concerning amount of time on the ground before eventually hobbling back to the locker room.
“He’s not a guy that we’re used to seeing staying on the ground that long,” Wembanyama said. “So every second that passed, I was a little worried. But he’s also one of the toughest guys I know. I’m pretty confident he’s going to come back quickly.”
Castle is unlikely to play on Wednesday at Golden State before the team heads into the All-Star break, but it appears he avoided significant injury.
