Spurs guard Stephon Castle came off the bench for the first time this season in Thursday’s win at Dallas, as the combination of a back-to-back games and a recent injury conspired to put him on a minutes restriction.
It isn’t a role Castle will fill for long, coach Mitch Johnson said.
“When we are healthy and everyone has their minutes available, Steph will be a starter,” Johnson said.
Castle logged 22 minutes against the Mavs, loading the box score with 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Given his playing time limits, Castle said he requested to come off the bench against the Mavericks so he would have enough minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
“I asked to come off the bench, so I could finish the game,” Castle said. “It’s cool though, when you can see the game and feel the flow of the game out, then come out and be aggressive.”
