DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks made a big trade this week, shaking up their roster by dealing All-Star center Anthony Davis to Washington.
The Spurs made no trades in advance of Thursday’s deadline, opting to make a playoff push with the players they have.
That got off to a decent enough start as the Spurs celebrated staying pat with a 135-123 victory over Dallas at the American Airlines Center.
Victor Wembanyama got the Spurs going by scoring 20 of his 29 points in the first half and making his first five 3-point shots in the process.
The 7-foot-4 All-Star added 11 rebounds, six assists, two steals and three blocks to his night’s work.
It didn’t quite reach the dizzying heights of Wembanyama’s first visit to Dallas this season — when he had 40 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks in the Spurs’ 33-point romp in the season opener.
Still, it was enough to get the Spurs to their third victory in a row heading into a rematch with Dallas on Saturday in San Antonio.
Not to be outdone, Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg starred on his way to 32 points, with the NBA’s No. 1 overall draft pick penning another stellar chapter in his rookie season.
Naji Marshall added another 32 points for Dallas, who never led after the eight-minute mark of the second quarter but nevertheless made the Spurs work well into the fourth quarter.
Harrison Barnes added 19 points for the Spurs, including five 3-pointers, his best game since Dec. 23.
The victory improved the Spurs to 35-16, ensuring they will finish better than last season’s 34-win mark.
Here are three takeaways from Thursday’s victory:
1. A different Cooper Flagg, as expected
Nearly four months ago, Flagg opened his NBA career in a rather inauspicious fashion, scoring 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting as the Mavericks were blown out by the Spurs 125-92.
On the same floor against the same opponent Thursday, Flagg showed how far he had come.
Coming into the night, Flagg was already the first teenager in NBA history to log three consecutive 30-point games: 49 against Charlotte, 34 against Houston and 36 against Boston.
He added a fourth in a row against the Spurs.

Flagg shook off a 5-for-13 first half Thursday and became nearly unstoppable in the second.
He scored 22 points after halftime, making 9 of 14 attempts in the final two quarters. In the midst of the flurry, Flagg showed off every bit of his arsenal.
He even threw in a Wembanyama-esque block of Keldon Johnson for good measure.
Flagg’s string of now four 30-point games have all come in defeats. It isn’t difficult to envision a future when some of those turn into wins for the Mavericks.
2. Castle shines in bench cameo
Playing on the second night of a back-to-back and coming off a minor groin injury, Stephon Castle entered Thursday on a bit of a minutes restriction.
To manage that, coach Mitch Johnson brought Castle off the bench for the first time this season.
Castle made the most of his 22 minutes, scoring 18 points to go with seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Don’t expect the 20-year-old Castle to make a run at any Sixth Man of the Year ballots this season, however.
Johnson says Castle is without a doubt a starter when the entire roster is healthy.
3. Second unit gets after the boards
A night after grabbing 15 rebounds in 15 minutes, backup center Luke Kornet was out Thursday with a variety of bumps and bruises.
It left Johnson to play considerably small in the second unit, often with either 6-6 rookie Carter Bryant or the 6-5 Keldon Johnson as the de facto small ball center.
That made gang rebounding a priority for the Spurs’ wing players.
It helped the Mavericks were a little light in the front court as well, with only the 6-10 Daniel Gafford and the 6-11 Moussa Cisse available as true big men.
The Spurs’ wings were game to hit the glass, with Castle and Julian Champagine grabbing seven rebounds apiece, Keldon Johnson grabbing six and Dylan Harper chipping in five.
It added up to a 50-41 rebounding edge for the Spurs.
After Thursday, the Spurs are 28-7 this season when either winning or tying the rebounding battle.
