For Spurs players, stress levels spike as NBA trade deadline looms

For fans across the NBA, the annual trade deadline can be one of the more exciting times on the league calendar.

Players going in. Players going out. Phone notifications turned up to 11. Anything possible at any moment.

For many of the same reasons, it is a day mostly reviled in NBA locker rooms from Sacramento to San Antonio and beyond.

“It’s a stressful time not only for you, but players that you might know, teammates that you might know,” Spurs guard Devin Vassell said. “I can’t wait for this trade deadline to be over, honestly.”

With this year’s deadline looming at 2 p.m. Thursday, the Spurs have a little while longer to hold their breaths.

A year ago last Sunday, the Spurs made the biggest midseason trade in franchise history, when they nabbed All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox away from the Kings.

That heist perhaps lessens the need for a similarly big swing this season.

The Spurs are not expected to be major players for the biggest name still (possibly) on the market — Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, who remains an undetermined level of disgruntled with the goings on around the Bucks.

Likewise, the Spurs have registered interest in a pair of big wing shooters — New Orleans’ Trey Murphy III and Brooklyn’s Michael Porter Jr. — but so far have found the price tag to be too high.

At a surprising 33-16 heading into Wednesday’s clash with Oklahoma City and ahead of schedule in their Victor Wembanyama-centric rebuilding project, the Spurs are more likely to make a move around the margins. That is, if they make one at all.

Another big wing shooter from New Orleans, Saddiq Bey, could be a fit at a fraction of Murphy’s cost.

The Spurs have inquired about Orlando center Goga Bitadze and Portland big man Robert Williams III, either of whom could shore up depth behind Wembanyama and top backup Luke Kornet.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Sochan sits atop the list of current Spurs possibly headed elsewhere.

Heading into Thursday, there remains serious uncertainty about whether the 22-year-old defensive specialist will still be on the Spurs’ roster come tipoff of that night’s game at Dallas.

The ninth overall pick in 2022, Sochan has fallen out of coach Mitch Johnson’s rotation this season. Sochan’s representatives have been given permission to seek a trade, while the Spurs have placed him on the inactive list for the past four games with what the team is calling a left quad strain.

According to reports, the New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns have expressed interest in Sochan. If no deal can be reached by the deadline, Sochan is a candidate to have his contract bought out.

The Spurs have three players on expiring contracts who could be prime chips for making trade math equations work — Harrison Barnes ($19 million), Kelly Olynyk ($13.4 million) and Sochan ($7.1 million). They also have a stash of 23 future draft picks to use as sweetener.

Acknowledging the stress spike the trade deadline causes in any NBA locker room, Johnson says he hopes players can find a way to stay even keeled until it passes.

“I hope that they always we feel that we’re up front and honest with them,” Johnson said. “There’s a lot of chatter and narratives going on all the time. We just try to control the things we can control — try to win the game, and then tomorrow we’ve got to get up and go to work again. That’s been the approach since October.”

The Spurs have made a February trade of some sort five years in a row.

Players know anything is possible.

Last year, the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis only to turn around and trade Davis to the Wizards on Wednesday as the Mavs try to retool once again, this time around Cooper Flagg.

“In my eight years, I’ve seen trades at least five or six of them,” Fox said. “I don’t know if I would say that’s what I’m expecting, but a lot of things happen at the trade market.”

In the days leading to what was expected to be a quiet deadline this week, Davis is already relocating — again — and the Los Angeles Clippers swapped All-Star point guards with Cleveland late Tuesday night, with James Harden headed east and Darius Garland relocating west.

In another mini-blockbuster, Memphis sent All-Star center Jaren Jackson Jr. to Utah.

This time of year, each new push notification sends at least a small shock wave through locker rooms not even connected to the reported trade.

“We all have social media,” Spurs forward Julian Champagnie said. “You hear things, you see things. I think we do a pretty good job of not thinking about it, not talking too much about it. And just kind of enjoying the time we have with each other.”

Many of the Spurs’ recent deadline moves were part of the pre-Wembanyama roster tear down, such as the 2022 trade of Derrick White to Boston or Jakob Poeltl’s trade to Toronto a year later.

Last year, the Spurs went in a different direction, cashing in chips to obtain a significant piece to pair with Wembanyama.

The Spurs nabbed Fox from Sacramento in a three-team deal that cost them the relatively low fee of three first-round picks, three second-round picks, Tre Jones, Zach Collins and Sidy Cissoko.

The Kings had just played in Minnesota earlier the night of Feb. 3 when news broke.

“I was still just chilling in my room in Minnesota when everything happened,” Fox said. “Then the next morning I was in San Antonio.”

As the trade deadline looms, there is no telling what player or players will get word that they live somewhere else now.

For players in the throes of an NBA season, uncertainty at the trade deadline is the hardest part.

“You look at your phone and you see something else, and you just never know what’s going to happen next,” Vassell said.

Asked if he wished he could confiscate his players’ devices until 2:01 p.m. Thursday, Johnson paused and smiled before answering.

“Yes,” Johnson said. “My kids’, too.”
