A day the Spurs began in Charlotte, included an unscheduled stop in Atlanta and a tipoff 4 ½ hours after landing in San Antonio ended with a 112-103 victory over Orlando.

Rookie Dylan Harper had a few words for all the Spurs endured Sunday.

“It was a great day,” Harper said.

Victor Wembanyama had 25 points and eight rebounds to go with five blocks and four steals to help lead the Spurs to the gut-check victory at the Frost Bank Center.

De’Aaron Fox added 14 points and 10 assists, while Harper contributed 15 off the bench.

The Spurs rebounded from a disappointing loss in Charlotte the day before, and did so despite a Griswoldian travel day that put Sunday’s back-to-back closer against the Magic in jeopardy.

Unable to get out of Charlotte on Saturday night due to record-setting 11-inch snowfall, the Spurs could not fly until Sunday morning. Minutes into their rescheduled flight, an issue with the plane’s cabin pressurization system prompted an emergency landing in Atlanta.

As the delays mounted, Sunday’s tipoff time kept shifting – from 3 p.m. to 6 to 8.

After changing planes, the Spurs arrived in San Antonio at 3:35 p.m, with most players beelining for the arena to get ready for another game.

Despite 25 points from Desmond Bane and 19 points and 10 rebounds from Paolo Banchero, the Spurs answered the call against the Magic.

Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s victory, that moved the Spurs back into second place in the West:

1. Spurs get credit for digging deep

Mitch Johnson was most impressed by what he called the Spurs’ “competitive response” to a trying day. The Spurs won many of the hustle categories against Orlando, outrebounding the bigger Magic 48-34. The outpaced Orlando in terms of second-chance points 17-15. The Spurs posted eight steals and six blocks.

As expected, Keldon Johnson – the Spurs’ resident human caffeine pill – provided the pop the rest of the team followed. Johnson finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, including three on the offensive end.

When it came time to win the game, the Spurs did the little things on defense necessary to bring it home. After giving up 40 points in the second quarter to allow the Magic back into the game, the Spurs limited Orlando 42 in the second half.

Johnson was proud of the way the Spurs handled a difficult day. His next wish is for the Spurs to bring the same fire and focus to games that come with a lesser degree of difficulty.

2. Barnes’ bench streak ends at 1

Harrison Barnes was moved to the bench Saturday in Charlotte, ending a string of 775 consecutive starting appearances dating back a decade.

His reserve role lasted all of one game.

With Stephon Castle out with adductor tightness, Barnes was back in the starting five against Orlando.

Coach Mitch Johnson went with a starting group he’d never used before, with Devin Vassell and Julian Champagnie bracketing Barnes, Fox and Wembanyama.

That unit got the Spurs off to one of their best starts in a while, with the team grabbing a 37-21 lead after the first quarter.

Playing on the ball more to start the game than he usually does, Fox got out to a quick start as well.

He had 10 points in the first quarter.

The Spurs eventually blew that 16-point lead, and needed their bench to help build it back up, but the fast start certainly helped after the long day they had endured.

3. Mitch Johnson, All-Star coach?

Sunday’s victory kept Johnson alive in the hunt to be the Western Conference All-Star coach.

Oklahoma City’s 121-111 win in Denver, which finished about an hour later, officially sealed the deal. Having earned All-Star honors last season, OKC’s Mark Daignault is, by rule, ineligible to coach in this year’s game.

That meant whoever was coach of the No. 2 team in the Western Conference by the end of the day Feb. 2 would have dibs.

The Spurs ended Sunday’s cut-off date with a 33-16 record. Denver dropped to 33-17, giving Johnson the honor by virtue of percentage points.

On Feb. 15 in Los Angeles, Johnson will become the first Spurs coach to take on All-Star duties since Gregg Popovich in 2016.
