CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Plenty of things were different about this game.

It tipped off at noon after the NBA moved the start time up three hours in advance of a winter storm that wound up blanketing all of North Carolina in snow. Harrison Barnes came off the bench for the first time in a decade. Victor Wembanyama struggled — on both ends of the court.

But for the Spurs, one thing remained the same: Their inability to beat the Hornets on the road.

Brandon Miller scored 20 of his 26 points in the first half, Collin Sexton added 21 off the bench, and the surging Hornets hung on for a 111-106 win over the Spurs on Saturday afternoon after leading by 20 points early in the third quarter.

LaMelo Ball had 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to help give the Hornets their longest win streak — six in a row — in nearly a decade. Moussa Diabate added 12 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks for Charlotte, which handed the Spurs (32-16) their fifth straight loss at the Spectrum Center.

“They’re a good team right now,” Spurs forward Devin Vassell said of the Hornets, who had the top point differential in the NBA in January. “They’re rolling offensively.”

Charlotte (22-28) never trailed after outscoring the Spurs 16-2 in the final 3:07 of the first half to take a 61-47 lead into halftime. Powered by 16 points from Miller, the Hornets won the second period 35-17.

“They can really score the ball, and if you have some mental lapses or you go on a stretch where you’re not scoring, they can get on a roll, and that’s what they did in that second quarter,” Vassell said. “You get in a hole like that. It’s tough to fight out. Obviously, we did a good job coming back, but we weren’t able to finish the game, so I credit them. They’re rolling right now, but we just got to be better. We just got to be mentally better and just ready to play.”

The Hornets shared the ball well against the Spurs, finishing with 30 assists on 39 made field goals.

“We’ve been playing to our strengths, playing with pace, playing with the pass," Miller said. "We turned down good shots to get some great ones. We did that at a high clip tonight — take the open ones and trust each other — and it showed.”

The Spurs, who pulled within two points three times late in the fourth quarter, trailed 109-106 with 36 seconds left when coach Mitch Johnson won a challenge that overturned a foul initially called against De’Aaron Fox on a 3-point try by Miller. But after Victor Wembanyama easily won the ensuing jump ball against his fellow Frenchman, the 7-foot-4 center missed a hurried 3-point shot and Kon Knueppel grabbed the rebound.

“I didn’t get a good enough look at it to probably give an advanced or a super deep explanation or thought on that,” Johnson said when asked about Wembanyama’s shot. “But, that was one of the options on the play; him coming off the screen, whether he wanted to take the three or curl it and try to get something at the rim.”

Fifteen seconds later, the Spurs fouled Miller, who sank both free throws to seal the game with 10.6 remaining. The loss came after the Spurs had two days of rest following their 111-99 win at Houston on Wednesday night.

“It was disappointing, for sure,” Johnson said. “I think Charlotte’s playing really well, but again, we won three out of the four quarters, so that means there were some things that we were doing well as well and we just needed to do it for more of the 48.”

Dylan Harper, who the Spurs selected No. 2 overall last June, led the Spurs with 20 points in a game that matched him against Knueppel, who the Hornets, the fourth overall pick. It was Harper’s fifth game of the season of 20 or more points and his first since he had 22 on Jan. 2 at Indiana.

Knueppel, who had a career-high 34 points in a 123-121 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night, finished with 13 points and six rebounds.

“I try to find a reason to get every game going, but I mean a rookie battle, those are games you kind of look forward to,” Harper said.

Wembanyama finished with 16 points after entering the game averaging 24.3 and hit just 6 of 15 attempts, including 0 for 3 from beyond the arc. He also failed to record a block for just the fourth time this season. Stephon Castle had 16 points and nine assists.

The slumping Barnes came off the bench for the first time since Jan. 14, 2016, when he was in his fourth NBA season and final one with the Golden State Warriors, to snap a streak of 775 consecutive starts. He did extend a streak consecutive games played Saturday, reaching 352 against the Hornets.

Barnes entered the game averaging just 6.8 points over 14 games in January while shooting only 26.7% from 3-point range in that stretch.

“We all occupy a role and the main focus is winning,” said Barnes, who had 11 points, hitting 3 of 5 from downtown against the Hornets. “So it’s just trying to figure out ways to impact the game, to still be vocal, to do my part, to help contribute to winning.”

Johnson downplayed the move, saying it “isn’t a big deal.”

“Harrison was great,” Johnson said. “Harrison Barnes starting for as long as he has is a big deal and that’s a testament to him and all his time and work and production he’s put in over the years, and he’s a consummate professional. I understand they’re very connected, but they’re also mutually exclusive to me in terms of one being a big deal, one not, and the big deal is just Harrison.”

Johnson said the move boiled down to trying to find a way to get Vassell back in rhythm.

“We’ve had a lot of guys in and out of the lineup, so it was just something as much as trying to get Devin back into his (starting) role that he had before and not a lot to it other than that,” Johnson said. “Just felt like Devin the last couple games didn’t quite find his rhythm, thought maybe that just getting him back to that starting lineup could maybe get him back in the fold.”

In his first start since Dec. 29, Vassell scored 13 points on 5 of 10, including 2 of 7 from distance. It was his third game back after missing 13 in a row with a groin injury.

“I don’t know if that’s going to continue,” Vassell said of the new starting unit. “I think we’re just trying out new stuff to see different lineups, different ways how to space the floor, so we’ll just see what happens with that. But I don’t know if it’s a permanent thing or not.”
