Why the Spurs cheered Devin Vassell’s return, even in defeat

Four minutes and 41 seconds into the Spurs’ otherwise disappointing loss to New Orleans on Sunday, guard Devin Vassell checked into his first game in nearly a month.

He received a rousing ovation from the Frost Bank Center faithful.

Seven minutes and 19 seconds later, the horn sounded on the end of the first quarter. At last, Vassell was allowed to catch his breath.

“After my first stint, I was definitely tired,” Vassell said. “After that, it was good.”

Having missed the previous 13 contests with a left adductor strain, Vassell was playing in his first action since a Dec. 29 defeat against Cleveland.

The Spurs welcomed him back by dropping a regrettable 104-95 decision against the worst team in the Western Conference.

Vassell himself was solid, scoring 13 points in 25 minutes off the bench.

The 25-year-old was 5 of 12 from the field, 2 of 8 from the 3-point line and didn’t produce much in the way of other counting stats (one rebound, one assist, one steal).

All in all, Vassell’s return was a bright spot in a forgettable night for the Spurs.

“I think first game I always try to refrain to overreact, good or bad,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “But it was great to see him out there and playing and sweating and competing and make some shots.”

Vassell acknowledged the difficulty of easing his way back into things after a prolonged layoff.

“It takes a little bit of time trying to get your rhythm back after not playing for a month,” he said. “And the guys obviously have been playing good, so I didn’t want to come out there and just feel like I was just jacking shots or nothing like that.”

Sunday marked only the eighth time this season the Spurs had played with their full roster intact. Even after falling to the Pelicans, they are 6-2 in those games.

Now that the Spurs are healthy again – knock on every bit of wood in the Frost Bank Center – they are looking forward to reintegrating Vassell into the rotation.

Sunday was the first step in a process that continues Wednesday, when the Spurs return to the floor for a road game at Houston.

“Devin is a huge part of what we have going on,” forward Keldon Johnson said. “He’s a vocal leader, on and off the court. To have him back and have his energy and hear his voice, it amplifies everything. Everyone was excited to have him back.”
