Spurs’ Devin Vassell set to return Sunday against Pelicans

Spurs forward Devin Vassell is set to return to action Sunday at home against New Orleans after missing 13 games in a row with a left adductor strain.

Vassell, who fully participated in Saturday morning’s practice, said he expects to be on a minutes restriction against the Pelicans.

“I don’t know what the minutes will look like, but I am definitely excited to be out there,” he said after the workout. “I don’t think the minutes restriction will be too crazy, but you just have to be cautious with this type of injury. I haven’t played for like a month, so I still have to work my way back into shape. But I’m ready to go.”

The Spurs confirmed after Vassell made those comments that his name will be removed from their injury report.

The Spurs (31-14) went 8-5 without Vassell. Sunday’s game will mark his first since he finished with seven points and four rebounds in 30 minutes in a 113-101 loss to Cleveland on Dec. 29 at the Frost Bank Center.

In 32 games this season, Vassell is averaging 31.9 minutes, 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting nearly 38% from 3-point territory on 7.0 attempts.

Vassell, 25, said it was difficult for him to be on the sideline during the team’s push to end a six-year playoff drought.

“When you’re not playing, you try to sit there and be engaged as much as you can, talking to (your teammates), talking to them through timeouts and stuff like that," the sixth-year pro said. "But there’s nothing like playing, being in the heat the moment with your guys going through battles. So, I’m excited to be back.”

Vassell said he’s glad he didn’t rush back onto the court before giving the injury a chance to fully heal.

“With an injury like this, you don’t want to come back and then have to sit out again because it starts nagging you,” he said. “I’ve been getting some good workouts in with my guys and I just feel good. I’m ready to go. But it’s definitely tough whenever you have to sit out and watch your teammates play. You feel like you can help. It always tests you mentally, for sure.”

Vassell said on the morning of the Cleveland game he "felt something” that indicated he might be injured.

“At first against Cleveland, I felt fine. I didn’t feel anything,” he said. “And as soon as I came off the court and came back in for my second stint, I just felt something didn’t feel right. And I was like, I’ll finish out the game. But it was aching for sure. And then after the game was kind of when I just kind of started feeling it more and more. Then the next day when I woke up I was like, OK, yeah, it’s definitely something.”

San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) shoots over Cleveland Cavaliers guard Sam Merrill (5) during the second half of an NBA game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, Dec. 29, 2025. The Spurs fell 113-101 to the Cavaliers.

Vassell said the team’s ability to forge a winning record without him — something it also did during separate injuries to De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper and Victor Wembanyuama — underscored its depth.

“That’s a testament to the depth we have on this team and the trust we have in all our guys,” Vassell said. “We’ve always been able to bounce back and honestly still excel.”

The return of Vassell and his ability to create shots should help the team’s trio of athletic, speedy guards — Fox, Harper and Stephon Castle — attack the paint better. Without Vassell’s outside game, teams have been able to pack the paint and have more success keeping them away from the basket.

“With people like me, Julian (Champagnie) and ‘HB’ (Harrison Barnes) out there, they can’t do that,” Vassell said. “If they do, you’re leaving us open for a 3, and then we’re killing it inside-outside. So just to have another wing, another presence, somebody out there who could space the floor just opens up the floor for everybody and (stops opponents) from double-teaming Vic (Wembanyama). They might still send them (to double-team him), but then you’re leaving wide-open shooters.”
