BOSTON — Spurs leaders are calling for the club to buckle down during this tough portion of its schedule, which Harrison Barnes says comes at a time when playoff contenders are starting to “lock in” on playoff seeding.

“They’re able to establish either more space between them and the next team behind them,” said Barnes, 14th-year forward who won a championship with Golden State in 2015. “Or if teams have been (dealing with injuries), this (is the time to) move up in the standings and either get into the play-in or get out of the play-in and get into the top six, whatever it is.”

What the Spurs don’t want to wind up doing is look back in April with regret thinking, “Man, if we would’ve got this game here, this game there …,” Barnes said.

In order to avoid that, he wants his teammates to think along the lines of, “Hey, OK, we’re going to take care of the games we need to take care of —now.”

“(You want it to be) if someone beats us … we played great and they beat us, as opposed to ‘We didn’t show up,’ or ‘We didn’t give effort,’ or ‘They just wanted them more.’”

Unfortunately for the Spurs, they’ve already dropped a game this month to a team that on paper they should have beat, losing 106-105 at injury-depleted Memphis last Tuesday. At that point, the Spurs had lost four of their last six games. They bounced back with a 107-91 win over the Los Angeles Lakers the next night in a game that marked the beginning of a stretch in which they will face six teams that have the goal of making deep playoff runs this season.

Given the recent lost to the Grizzlies, the Spurs didn’t puff out their chests after downing Luka Donic and the Lakers to improve to 26-11. They entered Saturday’s game with the Celtics (24-13) second in the West, five games behind Oklahoma City (32-7).

“There’s too many games. It’s too easy to make mistakes again," Victor Wembanyama said, referring to the 82-game regular season schedule. "The hard thing is to answer the call every night.”

The Spurs hope this season to not just snap their franchise-record six-season playoff drought but to make some noise in the postseason.

But even after a surprisingly strong start, they aren’t taking anything for granted.

“You’re essentially trying to establish good habits between now and the All-Star break, right?” Barnes said. “There’s nothing really in between. There’s no real breaks or any gaps. So it’s a matter of who can maintain focus the best. … So for a team like us, it’s all about how can we continue to get better? How can we continue to focus on where we want to be at and not let a good first half of the season be erased by a three-week bad stretch or something like that.”

To stay on course, the Spurs are focusing on dispelling any “little slumps of confidence,” Wembanyama said.

“The good thing is we got energizers in the locker room,” he said. “We got all the time good vibes together off the court.”

Vassell rehabs in Boston

Devin Vassell is on the Spurs’ three-game road trip that began Saturday against the Celtics and will conclude with stops at Minnesota on Sunday and at Oklahoma City on Tuesday.

The forward did rehab work at Emerson College for the groin injury that has sidelined him the last 5 games while his teammates went through shootaround Saturday morning.

There’s no timeline for his return, but Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said his rehab is going well.
