How the Spurs can improve
The highest highs of the Spurs’ December eight-game winning streak seem to be completely in the rearview mirror now. Two straight losses to the shorthanded Memphis Grizzlies and Portland Trail Blazers have cast a shadow of gloom over the Silver and Black to start the new year.
During this stretch, the Spurs have struggled to find an offensive rhythm and stop opponents on the defensive end. San Antonio is 1-2 in January. In those three games, they are shooting 30.1% from three and allowing 111.3 points per game. To be fair, during this stretch, the Spurs have been without two starters, Devin Vassell and Victor Wembanyama, the latter of whom is back to coming off the bench on a minutes restriction. Some of their issues could be improved by one of their best shooters (Vassell) and best defenders (Wemby) returning to a full workload.
More help besides those two could be on the way. The NBA trade deadline is in less than a month. San Antonio has the assets and contracts to be a buyer this year and has real needs on the roster. They could always use more three-point shooting. They have struggled to get consistent wing play this season. There could be big-time players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Lauri Markkanen available at the deadline. Would this be the time to make a swing for them?
Yet, with all of that said, the Spurs are second in the Western Conference with a 25-11 record. They are doing just fine. There are plenty of signs pointing toward them just standing pat at the deadline this year.
