INDIANAPOLIS – Spurs center Victor Wembanyama has been ruled out of Friday’s game at Indiana with a knee injury.
The All-Star did not travel with the team to Indianapolis, with the club opting to keep him in San Antonio for rehabilitation purposes.
An MRI conducted Thursday on Wembanyama’s ailing left knee revealed no ligament damage, and team officials remain optimistic their centerpiece star avoided serious injury.
Wembanyama hyperextended his knee with 10:32 remaining of the Spurs’ 134-132 victory over New York on Wednesday, when he got tangled with the Knicks’ Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordan Clarkson while battling for an offensive rebound.
After remaining prone on the court for a bit, Wembanyama limped directly to the locker room under his own power. He did not return to the game, but he did return to the sidelines wearing his warm-ups and slippers to watch the final minutes of the Spurs’ victory.
Wembanyama had 31 points and 14 rebounds at the time of the incident.
The Spurs face the Pacers on Friday, then return to San Antonio to complete the second half of a back-to-back Saturday against Portland. After that, the Spurs have two days off before a road game Tuesday at Memphis.
Wembanyama missed 12 games earlier this season with a left calf strain. The Spurs went 12-3 in them.
