From the day back in November when Luke Kornet was installed as the Spurs’ starting center, he knew he was only keeping the spot warm.

Considering the guy ahead of him on the depth chart was Victor Wembanyama and not Wally Pipp, Kornet realized the move was only temporary.

“It’s a tough gig,” Kornet said with a laugh. “Dead man walking.”

After making a start in 17 consecutive appearances while Wembanyama made his way back from a left calf strain, Kornet was back on the bench for the Spurs’ 127-114 loss to Utah on Saturday.

Having come off the bench for seven games upon his return to the active list, Wembanyama reclaimed his rightful place in the Spurs’ starting lineup against the Jazz.

The results were encouraging enough in Wembanyama’s first start since Nov. 14, with the All-Star center scoring 32 points to go with five blocks in the losing effort.

Wembanyama tallied 20 of those points in the second half as he attempted to rally the Spurs from a 17-point deficit.

“We go as Vic goes,” forward Keldon Johnson said. “He came out, and he set the tone. He was aggressive from the jump in the second half, and we all followed.”

Wembanyama was not made available to the media after the Spurs’ eight-game regular-season winning streak was snapped. The Spurs return to the Frost Bank Center to face Cleveland on Monday.

With Wembanyama still not cleared to surpass 30 minutes, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson had to get creative with the 7-foot-4 star’s allotment now that he is back in the starting five.

Wembanyama came out of the game 5:13 into the first quarter against Utah, and did not return until the start of the second period.

He finished the first half at 12:24, so that Johnson might be able to use him for a second-half stretch run.

“It’s a balancing act of continuing to grow his fitness while also trying to keep him fresh,” Mitch Johnson said. “We don’t want to have it where we don’t have him as the game goes on and we need him in there.”

In the end, Wembanyama finished with 27:42 of playing time, his most since coming back from injury.

He finished with his first 30-point game since Nov. 12 against Golden State and his first five-block game since Nov. 10 at Chicago.

Kornet, meanwhile, was able to take his return to the bench in stride. His only sin was failing to be a 7-foot-4, game-breaking alien.

If Kornet had to hand Wembanyama his job back, so be it.

“It was great to have him out there,” Kornet said.

Fox injury considered minor

The Spurs played Saturday without point guard De’Aaron Fox, who was sidelined with left adductor tightness

Mitch Johnson was optimistic the injury would keep the team’s second-leading scorer sidelined for only a short amount of time.

“Not too many big concerns,” Johnson said of Fox’s ailment. “Obviously he’s out, so it’s real. But hopefully it will be short term.”

Julian Champagnie made a spot start in Fox’s absence against the Jazz, but it wasn’t enough to shake the fourth-year forward out of a shooting slump.

Champagnie ended with four points on 2-of-10 shooting and missed all six of his 3-point tries.

Johnson provides another bench boost

Keldon Johnson was a bright spot of the Spurs’ otherwise forgettable loss to the Jazz, scoring a season-best 27 points.

It was the most produced by a Spurs bench player this season.

Johnson’s added 10 rebounds, making him the fourth reserve in Spurs history to hit those numbers in a game. That list includes Dominique Wilkins (1997), John Shumate (1980) and Billy Paultz (1978).

“Keldon would be a very good example of, when you put your energy into the right places typically you get rewarded,” Mitch Johnson said.
