LAS VEGAS – Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox is quick to credit his teammates for what he calls the “most efficient year I’ve had in my career.”

“Playing with all these guys, Dylan (Harper), Steph (Castle), Vic (Wembanyama), it makes the game easier for me,” Fox said after scoring 22 points on 8 of 15 from the field, 3 of 7 from 3-point territory and 3 of 4 at the free-throw line in Saturday’s 111-109 win over Oklahoma City in the NBA Cup semifinals.

The ninth-year pro enters Tuesday night’s championship matchup with the New York Knicks shooting nearly 49% from the floor, a career-best 39.1% from 3-point range and a career-high 84% from the free-throw line.

Fox has scored 20 points or more in six of his last seven games. In that seven-game stretch, he shot 50.0% from the field, 43.5% from beyond the arc and 83.3% from the foul line.

For the season, he is averaging 23.9 points, 6.2 assists, 3.6 rebounds and a team-high 1.4 steals over 17 games. He missed the first eight contests of the season due to a hamstring injury.

“It’s not like I just got better overnight,” Fox said. “They make the game so much easier for me. Obviously, there are times where I do have to create a shot for myself, and we all know I’m fully capable of doing that. But being able to play off them, the game comes a little easier.”

Champagnie sad to see Minix go

Spurs forward Julian Champagnie made sure to text and call Riley Minix after the Spurs waived the two-way contract forward last week to make room for Austin Spurs guard Kyle Mangas on a two-way deal.

“It sucks,” Champagnie said. "That was my dog right there. Riley is my little man. It stinks, but being someone who went through something like that, you got to use it as fuel. You can’t soak over it. You got to just say, ‘All right, it’s over. On to the next thing.’ You never know what happens.

“For me, I got waived and two days later I was signed somewhere else.”

The Spurs claimed Champagnie off of waivers on Feb. 16, 2023 after Philadelphia cut him loose on Feb. 14. The Spurs signed him to a four-year, $12 million contract on July 6, 2023.

Champagnie added he plans to go see Minix in Austin next chance he gets.

McLaughlin praises medical staff

Reserve guard Jordan McLaughlin said he has an appreciation for how the Spurs put player-safety first after he missed 10 games to rehab a hamstring injury before getting upgraded to available last week in Los Angeles.

“It’s great because I’ve been in a couple of situations on a team where the trainers may think you’re ready to go and you’re kind of not,” McLaughlin said. "And sometimes they still kind of push that they want you to play. So it’s great they do a great job of looking at the science and everything behind the injuries and getting guys back out there when not only they think it’s right, but when we feel it’s right.

“They definitely listen to us.”

Broadcast changes announced

The Spurs on Monday announced TV broadcast changes for three games. Friday’s game at Atlanta will be televised on Fan Duel Sports Network. It was originally scheduled to air on KENS 5.

The Feb. 7 home game against Dallas will air on Fan Duel Sports Network and Amazon Prime. The March 3 road game at Philadelphia will be broadcast by Fan Duel Sports Network and NBC/Peacock. All game tipoff times remain the same.
