pic.twitter.com/7ukNHeHkRo

This Week in the NBA: Wembanyama and Curry return, Thunder want the record and more

Week 8 in the NBA had the fewest games played of any week so far in the 2025-26 NBA season, thanks to the NBA Cup. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t noteworthy moments worth revisiting.

The Chef is back

Stephen Curry scored 39 points in a return from a quad injury that sidelined him for five games. Despite a 127-120 Golden State Warriors loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves at Chase Center on Friday, Curry surpassed Michael Jordan for the most 35-point games in NBA history after his 30th birthday (94) and came within one point of passing him for the most such 40-point games.

Then on Sunday, Curry surpassed Jordan with his 45th game scoring 40-plus, pouring in 48 points in the Warriors’ 136-131 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

12 THREES.

Despite Curry’s exploits, Golden State (13-14) is in eighth place in the Western Conference.

Wembanyama returns to lead Spurs to NBA Cup final

Another All-Star made his return to the court when Victor Wembanyama came back from a 12-game absence to finish with 22 points, nine rebounds and two blocks Saturday while playing on a minutes restriction.

Wembanyama was impactful in his 21 minutes, finishing a team-high plus-21 off the bench to power the Spurs to a 111-109 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. In a recent interview with ESPN, Wembanyama was asked who he thought was the best player in the NBA.

“I think (Nikola) Jokić is the best offensive player. I don’t think he’s the best player,” Wembanyama answered. “I think it’s between Giannis (Antetokounmpo) and Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander). … When I come back on the court, I think it will be me.”

After his dominant performance against a Thunder team that has looked practically unbeatable, it’s hard to dismiss his comments as pure arrogance.

Especially when he can pull off plays like this:

ARE YOU KIDDING?!?!

Speaking of the Thunder…

Thunder players want to beat Warriors’ 73-win regular-season record

During NBA Cup media day, Gilgeous-Alexander was asked if Golden State’s 73-win record meant something to the Thunder.

“Absolutely. Winning matters,” Gilgeous-Alexander responded.

Earlier this season, the Thunder became the third team in NBA history to begin a season 23-1 or better, joining the 2015-16 Warriors (24-0) and the 1969-70 New York Knicks (23-1).

After the loss to the Spurs in Las Vegas, that mission suffered a slight setback, but the Thunder have a chance to right the ship with a home game against the 6-19 Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday. OKC won its first matchup against the Clippers, 126-107, in November, but Kawhi Leonard did not play. Nonetheless, SGA and the Thunder didn’t seem to be discouraged about their chase for 74 despite the loss.

“Seventy-three and nine? I mean, the position we’re in right now, what are we, 24-2? My goal is to get better,” Gilgeous-Alexander said after the game. “So if we get better than what we are now, that should take care of itself.”

If the Thunder are to break the record, they’ll need to win 50 of their remaining 56 regular-season games.

The Pistons have championship aspirations

On Saturday, Jalen Brunson continued his torrid scoring run, topping 30 points for the fourth straight game as the New York Knicks pulled away late to beat the Orlando Magic 132-120 in the other NBA Cup semifinal.

New York has dominated headlines recently, winning nine of its last 10 games and securing a spot in the NBA Cup final. However, the team in first place in the Eastern Conference seems to be getting slept on as a true title contender.

Asked Jalen Duren how much confidence wins like tonight give the team as they get healthier.

“It shows the world that we’re serious about winning, that we are serious about contending for a championship. Because that’s what we do it for. We’re not here just to win games.” pic.twitter.com/7ukNHeHkRo

— Hunter Patterson (@ HunterPatterson) December 13, 2025

The Detroit Pistons tied their second-best 25-game start in franchise history, per the Detroit Free Press, after improving to 20-5 on Friday with a 142-115 win over the Atlanta Hawks. Eight Detroit players scored in double figures, led by Isaiah Stewart with 17. The others were Cade Cunningham (15), Duncan Robinson (15), Jalen Duren (14), Ausar Thompson (12), Ron Holland II (12), Jaden Ivey (10) and Caris LeVert (10).

“There’s no bench unit,” Duren said after the game. “The guys who come off the bench for us are starting-caliber players.”

Detroit’s depth has carried it throughout the season. And now there is a real belief in the Pistons’ locker room that they are not only able to contend for a championship, but also that they are the best team in the league.

Monday’s game against the Boston Celtics will be a good barometer for the team as the Pistons look to avenge a 117-114 loss last month.

What to look for this week

• The NBA Cup final between the Spurs and Knicks in Vegas tips off at 8:30 p.m. (ET) Tuesday. With both teams playing to win a cash prize of $530,000 per player, we can expect to see the same playoff-style intensity that has been on display during the previous rounds of the in-season tournament.
