De’Aaron Fox #4 of the San Antonio Spurs reacts after scoring a three-pointer against Franz Wagner #22 of the Orlando Magic during the fourth quarter at Kia Center on December 03, 2025 in Orlando, Florida.

CLEVELAND — The book has long been out on De’Aaron Fox.

It was clear Orlando’s Franz Wagner had read it.

Faced with defending the speedy Spurs guard late in the fourth quarter Wednesday, the 6-foot-10 Wagner did exactly what he had been coached to do.

He backed up and gave Fox space. Not a lot of space, but enough for Fox to throw in a pair of step-back 3-pointers in the final 3:15 of a 114-112 Spurs victory at the Kia Center.

“If we’re going to play one-on-one, a lot of defenders in this league give me a step, knowing that I’m trying to get downhill,” Fox said.” If they give me the step, I have the confidence to step back, knowing that I have time and space to knock shots down.”

One of the fastest guards in the NBA, the 6-3 Fox has fashioned an All-Star career behind his ability to blow by defenders and get into the paint.

So far this season, he has been swishing away from 3-point range as well. Heading into Friday’s game at Cleveland, Fox was averaging 25 points, operating as the team’s go-to scorer with Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle sidelined.

He has been more than a layup and mid-range maven, though.

Fox has been using the extra step defenders are affording him to convert 3-pointers at a career-best clip, making 32 of 83 (38.6%) entering Friday.

That three-level scoring ability has made the 27-year-old Fox a matchup terror for opposing defenses.

“When you have to cover ground with someone with his speed and dynamic ability with the basketball in his hands, he’s almost unguardable,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “Then when you bring a crowd to him, it opens up things for his teammates. So him playing at all three levels is extremely important not only for himself, but for our team to get going.”

Through his first eight seasons in Sacramento, a lack of a reliable 3-point shot was the only offensive knock on Fox, who otherwise was billed as one of the league’s best scorers.

He boasts a career mark of 33.2%. In 2022-23, Fox made his lone All-Star team while hitting at a 32.4% rate. In two separate seasons — 2019-20 and 2021-22 — Fox shot less than 30% from beyond the 3-point stripe.

Over the past 10 games, Fox has been on absolute fire from 3-point range.

He has connected on 28 of 67 3-point attempts in that span, good for a 41.8% success rate.

Harrison Barnes, who played 5½ seasons alongside Fox in Sacramento before rejoining forces with the Spurs, likes what he’s seen from his teammate’s 3-point improvement.

“It’s no secret what he can do in transition, how he collapses the defense,” Barnes said. “Teams have to load up to stop him. Adding another dimension and being able to shoot it at a high and efficient clip makes him that much more difficult to guard.”

Fox is eager to see what happens when opposing defense begin to give more thought to guarding his 3-point shot.

That should re-open the paint to his speedy drives.

“If it makes the defender take even half a step up, if they bite just a little bit, (you can) get downhill,” Fox said. “At that point, it’s just make the right play.”

The key, Fox said, is to be willing to knock down whatever shot a defense will give him.

For now, many of those are still likely to come from 3-point range.

If that is the case, Fox will keep firing away and force opponents to re-write the book on him.

“My teammates have confidence in me and my coaches have confidence in me,” Fox said. “That’s why they give me the ball in those types of situations, with that type of spacing, and I go out there and just try to execute what we work on.”

Kornet back on the shelf

Two nights after making the game-saving block in Orlando, Spurs center Luke Kornet was listed as out Friday in Cleveland with left ankle soreness.

The 7-1 Kornet missed seven games earlier this season with a sprain to the same ankle, as well as a shoulder sprain. Kornet had started the previous nine games in place of Wembanyama, who is sidelined with a left calf strain.

He is considered day-to-day.
