San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama hypes up the crowd as he watches his team defeat the Atlanta Hawks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025.

MINNEAPOLIS – While the Spurs have been out on a four-game road trip that ends Sunday in Minnesota, their All-Star center has been at home in San Antonio nursing a calf strain and screaming his lungs out.

Victor Wembanyama has been limited in his physical activity while recovering from injury, but has not been limited in his cheering.

Last week, Wembanyama showed up outside the Victory Capital Performance Center to lead members of the Spurs’ supporter section – nicknamed “The Jackals” – in a series of new chants and cheers.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said it was an approved part of Wembanyama’s return-from-injury program, figuring the worst that can come of it for his star player is a sore throat.

“We’re OK with it,” Johnson said with a chuckle.

It was Wembanyama who generated the idea for “The Jackals” in the first place.

Wembanyama held tryouts for the section over the summer, and picked the captains himself.

He thought the group should be modeled after the rowdy supporter sections at European soccer matches he grew up attending.

The way the 21-year-old Wembanyama has immersed himself in Spurs culture since his 2023 arrival in San Antonio should not be taken lightly, Johnson said.

“The saying goes, when people show you who they are, believe them,” Johnson said. “He’s been committed and invested. He’s trusted. He’s worked. He’s had his actions back up his words. It’s awesome.”

In the meantime, Wembanyama will continue to work his way back to the court and give The Jackals something to cheer about.

Sunday marked the seventh consecutive game Wembanyama has missed with his calf injury, suffered in a Nov. 14 loss at Golden State. The team has offered no specific timetable for his return.

At the time of the injury, the Spurs announced Wembanyama would be re-evaluated in two or three weeks, a window that is fast approaching.

Though no two injuries are the same, it is worth noting rookie guard Dylan Harper suffered a left calf strain on Nov. 2 and was back on the floor Nov. 26 at Portland, a 24-day layoff.

Though the Spurs have so far kept Wembanyama off the road during his recovery process, he has been a fixture at the team’s home games.

He was on the bench in street clothes for the three games prior to the road trip, engaging with teammates, offering advice in huddles and occasionally cajoling referees.

“All Vic wants to do is win, regardless of if he’s playing or not,” guard De’Aaron Fox said. “With him being out, I don’t think that was going to make him sit there and just watch the game. He’s in it just as much as he is when he is playing. That’s what you want out of a guy like that.”

To Johnson, Wembanyama’s level of commitment to the team even while on the injured list has been an encouraging sign.

“San Antonio and our community is lucky to have him,” Johnson said. “And hopefully he feels the same way.”

Wings coming up big on the boards

When Wembanyama went out, the Spurs knew rebounding could be a struggle with their 7-foot-3 leading boards-getter sidelined.

The team have weathered his absence thanks to a pair of wings doing dirty work on the glass.

In Friday’s win at Denver, Julian Champagine had 10 rebounds to go with 25 points for this third consecutive double-double. Keldon Johnson narrowly missed his second straight double-double with eight boards and 14 points.

“It’s just crashing the glass,” Champagnie said. “The coaching staff has been honest about the opportunity battle and winning that, because that helps us win the games.”

Champagnie’s approach to grabbing rebounds is straightforward enough.

“It’s just as simple as putting your body in there,” Champagnie said. “I tell myself, ‘Go in there, be physical, go hit somebody.’

Before this season, Champagnie had only one career double-double to his credit.

He sees no reason why double-digit rebounding nights can’t be his norm in the near term.

“If I’m going to play 30 minutes right now because guys are out, I can grab 10 rebounds,” he said.

Birthday boy Bryant biding his time

It was a memorable road trip for Spurs rookie Carter Bryant, who celebrated his 20th birthday on Nov. 26 while the team was in Portland.

That leaves fellow rookie Dylan Harper as the only teenager on the Spurs’ roster. He does not turn 20 until March.

Bryant, selected 14th overall out of Arizona, has filled a small but consistent role as the Spurs battle injury issues.

Heading into Sunday, Bryant had appeared in nine games during November, averaging 2.3 points in 6.3 minutes.

Bryant said he has leaned on the team’s two oldest players, 33-year-olds Harrison Barnes and Bismack Biyombo, for help in navigating the first few months of his NBA career.

“Those are the two I go to every day,” Bryant said. “Whether it’s on the floor, my process, becoming a better basketball player, they always give me good insight.”
