Open Thread: A little gratitude for Gregg Popovich

Happy holidays, Pounders. I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving (for those who partook).

I saw this online the other day and just wanted to share.

These are just a few of the many, many moments that made Pop one of the most beloved figures in San Antonio.

He’s excelled at coaching and is known for basketball, but it was who he was and what he stood for off the court that has made him larger than life. His focus on relationships and his sense of humor truly inspire.

I particularly love Shaq’s expression when he realized Pop is pranking him at the start of the game. I found the clip that helped explain why it was so funny.

Shaq described the fouling technique as “cowardly.” Instead of starting a public argument, Pop made light of it and got a smile from the legendary big man.

I also respect Pop’s addressing the crowd regarding the consistent booing of Kawhi Leonard. It didn;t sit well with the crowd as they booed louder through the duration of the. game. More than a few comments stated Pop was out of line, but it was a poignant reminder that basketball is a game, most of the players know each other on a deeper level as competition begins in childhood, and we could all be a little better.

It also underscored that Pop and the Spurs had moved on where many fans hadn’t. We tend to treat opposing players as comic book villains and not the athletes they are.

Thanks, Pop. For all the memories, the titles, the greatness, but mostly for being you.

The Spurs won on Wednesday, a win tonight will lock them in to contend in the NBA Emirates Cup in Las Vegas.

Go Spurs Go!
