In a rare public appearance after suffering a stroke last November, Spurs coaching great Gregg Popovich participated in a conference Thursday at Trinity University for what the school called “future healthcare leaders.”

Sean Elliott, the former Spurs star turned broadcaster, accompanied his former coach to the event.

Trinity posted photos and information about the event on social media.

“A remarkable night at Trinity!,” a post on the school’s Facebook page said. “Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich and San Antonio Spurs legend Sean Elliott joined Trinity HCAD students and Methodist Healthcare residents for an inspiring conversation about leadership, teamwork, and culture. We’re proud to bring San Antonio icons and future healthcare leaders together on our campus.”

Photos posted by Trinity on Facebook showed Popovich with a microphone in hand addressing the gathering. Golden State coach Steve Kerr, a close friend of Popovich’s, was asked before Friday night’s game against the Spurs about the Hall of Famer’s participation in the conference.

“We texted today, we weren’t able to connect, but I was with Sean Elliot last night and he told me he was part of that event,” Kerr said. “And, so, it was great to catch up with Sean and hear what they had done previously in the evening. Pop and I text all the time, so we stay in touch.”

Popovich retired from coaching in May as the NBA’s all-time winningest coach after 29 seasons guiding the Spurs, a run that included winning five NBA titles and 170 playoff games, the most by any coach with any one team and third overall behind only Phil Jackson (229) and Pat Riley (171).

Popovich, 76, had the stroke on Nov. 2, 2024, before a game at the Frost Bank Center. He missed all but five games last season after turning over the coaching reins to assistant Mitch Johnson.

Popovich spoke at the news conference in May to announce Johnson as his successor but has kept a low profile since then even as he continues to serve as the team’s president of basketball operations.

Popovich attended the regular season home opener last month at the Frost Bank Center but watched the game from a private area away from fans and media.

Before the arena doors opened, the Spurs unceremoniously raised a white banner to the rafters of the building that read, “Pop 1,390,” in tribute to his NBA-record career coaching victories. In addition to the Spurs logo, the banner was emblazoned with five stars signifying the five championships the Spurs won under his direction and the words “Hall of Fame” in honor of his 2023 induction.
