3 takeaways as the Spurs fall short against Curry, Warriors

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30) reacts after making another three-pointer against the San Antonio Spurs during an NBA Cup game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Friday, Nov. 14, 2025. The Spurs fell to the Warriors 109-108 with Curry making 49 points.
De’Aaron Fox’s 18-footer bounced on the rim once, then twice then bounded out of the rim.
Fox’s shoulders slumped, as Stephen Curry howled in celebration.
Golden State escaped with a 109-108 victory over the Spurs at the Frost Bank Center on Friday in NBA Emirates Cup play.
The Spurs were left to bemoan one that got away.
Curry continued his torrid two-game stay in San Antonio, with a season-high 49 points and nine 3-pointers. That came two nights after Curry poured in 46 to ignite a 125-120 win at the Frost Bank Center.
Victor Wembanyama had 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Spurs, while Fox chipped in 24 points and 10 assists.
Fox had a chance to win the game for the Spurs at the horn, but his jumper bounced out to seal the Warriors’ win.
The late misfire had ramifications in Emirates Cup play. The Spurs’ loss ensured every team in the ultra-competitive West Group C — nicknamed “the Group of Death” — has a 1-1 mark in pool play.
Here are three takeaways from Friday’s defeat, which dropped the Spurs to 8-4 overall:
1. Hats off the Steph Curry
After what he accomplished in his two-night run in San Antonio, the Warriors All-Star might not want to leave town just yet.
The Spurs will be glad to see Curry go.
Twice in two games, Curry set season scoring highs.
His totals over the pair of Golden State victories were mind-numbing: 95 points, 29 of 51 from the floor, 14 of 32 from 3-point range.
Heck, Curry’s totals from the pair of third quarters were mind-numbing: 39 points and 7 of 13 from 3-point land.
There are dozens of things that go into winning or losing. In this week’s double-dip, the Warriors’ main advantage was Curry.
2. The dunk that wasn’t
Midway through the fourth quarter, Wembanyama turned in one of the most spectacular baskets in Spurs history that never counted.
Having spent a few uncomfortable moments jostling and jawing with Draymond Green as the Spurs set up to inbound under the Warriors’ basket, Wembanyama instantly took a lob from Castle and slammed it left-handed over the top of his Golden State pesterer.
Officials whistled Green for a foul on the play, and the Frost Bank Center howled, believing Wembanyama would be headed to the line for a 3-point play.
Instead, referees ruled Green’s foul came before Wembanyama had possession of the ball, making it on the floor.
No basket.

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green (23) and San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) have a heated exchange during an NBA Cup game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Friday, Nov. 14, 2025. The Spurs fell to the Warriors 109-108.
The possession ended up working out for the Spurs. Green picked up another foul, Harrison Barnes made a pair of free throws after a loose ball foul on Butler, and the Spurs at least ended the possession with points.
Another loose ball foul on Green on the other end sent Wembanyama back to the foul line for two more, incensed Warriors coach Steve Kerr into a technical foul and got the sold-out crowd revved up again.
That all was in the midst of a run that put the Spurs up by 10 with 6:53 to play.
If the Spurs had hung on to win the game, that stretch — inspired by the Wembanyama dunk that wasn’t — would have been the momentum-swinger.
3. Julian Champagnie keeps streak intact
Much ado has been made of Harrison Barnes’ long-running iron man streak, which hit 316 consecutive appearances Friday.
Julian Champagnie has his own streak, which briefly appeared in jeopardy after the Spurs’ morning walkthrough.
The 24-year-old small forward found himself on the pregame injury report, listed as questionable with a hip contusion suffered against the Warriors two nights earlier.
Champagnie was not surprised to find his availability uncertain.
“That (expletive) hurt,” he said.
In the end, Champagnie was a full go in Friday’s rematch with Golden State.
Of course he was.
It marked Champagnie’s 115th consecutive game played, a streak dating to March of 2024.
“It’s something that probably gets overlooked too much by everybody,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson. “Just availability, reliability, dependability — and he’s been that for us in a lot of different ways.”
