Golden State coach Steve Kerr made another plea for gun reform after a famed former football coach in the Bay Area died after being shot at the college campus where he worked as athletic director.
Oakland police said John Beam, who was featured in the Netflix series “Last Chance U” that spotlighted connections he made with players others wouldn’t take a chance on, was shot at Laney College on Thursday in a “very targeted incident” by a 27-year-old suspect who knew the 66-year-old coach, the Associated Press reported.
Kerr, 60, arrived at his pre-game news conference heading into Friday night’s game with the Spurs at the Frost Bank Center wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with “John Beam” and a black heart.
“Today is a really, really sad, sad day for the Bay Area,” Kerr said. "Sad day for coach Beam’s family and everybody in Oakland. He was a revered figure in Oakland, did so much for so many people. And so I, on behalf of the Warriors, just want to extend our condolences and remind everybody we have to be the change as a community, as citizens.
“We have to be the ones who insist we address the gun violence issue in this country.”
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee described Beam as a “giant” in the city for mentoring thousands of young people, including her own nephew, and “gave Oakland’s youth their best chance” at success.
Laney College is a public community college in Oakland.
Kerr said he did not know Beam personally.
“I’ve got a lot of friends in Oakland who knew him well and texted me today and told me what an important figure he’s been in Oakland and at Laney in particular,” Kerr said.
Kerr, whose father was shot dead in a terrorist attack in Beirut in 1984, has made several impassioned pleas for gun reform during his 11 seasons as coach of the Warriors, including at his pregame news conference at Game 4 of the Western Conference finals against the Dallas Mavericks in 2022.
That game occurred on the same day that a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde resulted in the deaths of 19 children and two adults.
“When are we going to do something?” Kerr shouted, slamming his fists on the table, ESPN reported. “I’m tired. I am so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there. I am so tired of the, excuse, I am sorry, I am tired of the moments of silence. Enough!”
