把握当下 (Chase the Moment)。

How Spurs’ Harrison Barnes became the NBA’s version of Forrest Gump

San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes (40) drives past Golden State Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski (2) during the second half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025. Golden State beat San Antonio 123-120.

They called him The Senator.

Harrison Barnes was 20 years old when he arrived at Golden State in 2012, a wide-eyed, fresh-faced rookie new to the NBA and eager to establish his place among the best players in the world.

He just didn’t act like it.

“He was a guy who was wise beyond his years,” Warriors All-Star guard Stephen Curry said. “From Day 1.”

A year later, Steve Kerr showed up to coach an up-and-coming Golden State squad, and The Senator got a promotion.

“We called him Barack,” Kerr said. “He felt very presidential from the moment I met him.”

That moniker offers one measure of how long the statesman-like Barnes, now a Spurs’ starting forward, has stuck around the NBA. When Barnes played his first game, on Oct. 31, 2012, Barack Obama was still in his first term.

Since then, the 33-year-old native of Ames, Iowa, has pieced together a 13-year career that has often afforded him a front-row seat to basketball history, like Forrest Gump with a jump shot.

He was on the front lines of the Curry revolution at Golden State, winning a title with the 3-point happy Warriors in 2016.

He played in Dallas at the tail end of Dirk Nowitzki’s Hall of Fame career, and was still with the Mavericks in 2018, when a rookie named Luka Doncic joined the club.

Six seasons in Sacramento were mostly fallow, but Barnes was part of the 2022-23 “Light the Beam” Kings squad that snapped the longest active playoff drought in the league.

Now Barnes is in his second season with the Spurs, where he spends four quarters a night under the Victor Wembanyama big top.

“I’m extremely blessed to be in the league for this long,” Barnes said. “I have been a part of great teams, great moments, witnessed great players every night. It’s definitely something that I’m very appreciative for.”

Barnes said he absorbed a bit of something from every great player he has called a teammate.

His four seasons with Curry from 2012 to 2016 might have meant the most so far.

Barnes was younger and more impressionable then, even if it didn’t outwardly show.

Golden State Warriors’ Harrison Barnes (40) celebrates his three-point basket with teammate Stephen Curry (30) during the second half of an NBA basketball game on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, in Oakland, Calif. Barnes had a front-row seat for the rise of Stephen Curry and helped build the Warriors into a dynasty. Now, he plays with another basketball phenom in Victor Wembanyama.

He watched as Curry shaped himself from a skinny shooter from Davidson into an MVP and an NBA champion.

“All those guys are for sure different, but I think the commonality in all of them is the commitment to the craft,” Barnes said. “It’s wanting to be great every single night. Having a front-row seat to that has been special.”

Over the years, Barnes’ commitment to his teams has been equally unwavering.

He has played and started in 315 consecutive games, including all 82 in three straight seasons and each of the Spurs’ 10 outings so far in this campaign.

Barnes has not missed a game since Dec. 4, 2021, with Sacramento.

It’s as good an explanation as any for why Barnes keeps rounding out rosters next to some of the greatest players the game has ever known.

“When you have a consistent standard of reliability and dependability on what you’re going to bring and how you’re going to play, it helps (a coach) put together the puzzle for that night,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “And he’s as consistent as it gets.”

On nights like Wednesday, when the 37-year-old Curry scored a season-high 46 points to bring Golden State back from the brink and beat the Spurs 125-120, Barnes cannot help but have flashbacks to his younger days.

Curry was brilliantly vintage, pumping in 22 third-quarter points to fuel the Warriors’ second-half comeback and help them overcome a pair of triple-doubles from Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.

The Spurs and Warriors face a rematch Friday at the Frost Bank Center, in a game that will count toward the NBA Emirates Cup group play standings.

Asked Wednesday why he continues to push himself in his 16th season, having long since accomplished everything that is possible to accomplish in the game, Curry recited the slogan the Warriors have selected as a team to guide their 2025-26 campaign.

Chase the Moment.

“That’s kind of the feeling,” Curry said. “It’s not really (about) an accolade thing or an accomplishment, other than a championship. It’s moments like tonight when you’re in a fight and 15 guys gotta try to find a way to win a game because there’s pride and there’s expectations. You live for those moments.”

Barnes once stood side-by-side with Curry through those moments. Now he is with Wembanyama.

Those who know Barnes best say he isn’t close to being done making his mark in the NBA, and even less so in life.

When Barnes finally does step away from basketball, Curry can envision The Senator becoming an actual senator.

“He’s probably going to go back to Iowa and be a public servant,” Curry said. “I see that in his future.”

That is an aspiration for another time.

Friday night, Barnes will do what he has always done.

He will slip on an NBA jersey, take his place next to one of the game’s all-time superstars and go chase another moment.
