Last night in Chicago, Victor Wembanyama tallied his 95th consecutive NBA game with at least on block.

The ongoing feat is enough to elevate him third all time behind Dikembe Mutombo’s 116 straight games and Patrick Ewing’s top seeded 145-game streak.

Both of the big men hit these all time highs over three decades ago, underscoring the difficulty in maintaining defensive consistency at this level.

Mark Eaton was a two-time Defensive Player of the Year. Mutombo garnered the honors four times. Incomprehensibly, Ewing was never recognized at the DPOY.

Wembanyama is good company. And if he can remain healthy, a shoo-in for this year’s Defensive Player of the Year. As things are going, he’ll amass more blocks in one season than some entire teams.

I was looking at some interesting Castle’s stats:

He’s amongst the best finishers in the NBA around the basket (77%). Averaging 2 steals per game, 1 block. His assists are up to 34%, now averaging close to 8 assists per game. For perspective, that’s higher than Shai. He’s become a money shooter from 10 - 16ft and, interestingly, from 16ft - 3pt line. (Cross the line however and he’s struggling).

Was looking at our schedule here and thought wow this is a hard two games in a row against the warriors. Before looking up more of the specifics. Both games are at home and the warriors have to play OKC tonight before traveling to SA to play us tomorrow. That’s a brutal schedule for the warriors.

Wemby’s shot blocking stands out to me for the variety of shots that he blocks and that he gains possession of the ball after quite often.

To compare, Eaton was a human wall because he was long and big-bodied, the type that muscling around in the paint was impossible. Most of his blocks were against post-up players, and there were a bevy of top-notch such guys in his time. Ewing was similar, but he was also great as a help defender against quick penetrators. More nimble than Eaton, his range as a shot blocker was wider. Olajuwon and Robinson were almost mirrors of each other, electric bodies and even better than Ewing.

Meanwhile, Wembanyama swallows everything because of footwork, gait and reach, and otherworldly timing. Plus, he has the wherewithal to use the backboard as an aid to take possession of the ball. He is redefining shot blocking and I’m lightheaded watching him do it.
