How the Spurs’ Champagnie really feels about a move to the bench

CHICAGO – The move from the starting lineup to the Spurs bench hasn’t changed much for Julian Champagnie.

Except for the part where it feels like he’s playing a different sport at times.

“Besides me getting on the bike,” Champagnie said, “that’s about it.”

The 24-year-old Champagnie started the first eight games of the Spurs’ season at small forward. De’Aaron Fox’s return from an offseason hamstring injury created a domino effect that bumped Champagnie to the second unit.

No longer in the starting lineup beginning with Saturday’s win over New Orleans, Champagnie’s new routine is to retire to the exercise bike in the team tunnel after pregame introductions, hoping to stay loose until his name is called.

“Other than that, the details stay the same,” Champagnie said before the Spurs’ contest Monday in Chicago. “The way I have to play stays the same. The level of intensity stays the same. I’m just not starting the game. That’s all.”

After a hot start to the season as a starter, Champagnie has taken to his return to a bench role as if we were, well, riding a bike.

Against the Pelicans, Champagnie pumped in 14 points to lead all Spurs bench scorers and made 2 of 4 3-point tries.

In four seasons since joining the Spurs, Champagnie has burnished a reputation as a glue guy who could fill multiple roles.

He has become a rotation fixture the past two-plus seasons, appearing in a 165 of a possible 173 games in that span – including all 82 last season.

Champagnie has started some of those (96) and come off the bench in others (69).

As such, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said he had no doubt Champagnie would take the latest adjustment to his role in stride.

So far, Champagnie has not disappointed.

“I’m here to do whatever the team needs me to do,” Champagnie said. “It’s pretty easy to go out there and play my game and be that guy.”

More than merely accepting a bench role, Champagnie said he would gladly trade his starting job for to have a healthy Fox in the lineup.

Fox scored 24 points in his season-debut to lead the Spurs against New Orleans, a preview of what Champagnie and other Spurs hope is to come.

“I think it opens up things for everyone,” Champagnie said of Fox’s return. “You have to guard him. He’s an All-Star. Having him back has been big. I think it will help us continue to get some more wins.”

Whether starting or in reserve, Champagnie’s 3-point shooting and defensive presence have been key components in the Spurs’ 7-2 start heading into Monday’s tilt at the United Center.

In those nine games, Champagnie averaged 10.6 points and shooting a 37.5% from 3-point range.

He was coming off a season-high 22-point performance against Houston that included six 3-pointers at the time of his shift to the bench.

Even with Fox back, Johnson said few roles are cemented in stone.

“It probably won’t be the last starting lineup of the year,” Johnson said of the Spurs’ new configuration.

Whatever role works for Champagnie. All he needs to know is when to start pedaling.
