Spurs’ Stephon Castle hails passage of arena vote as ‘great news’

San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) pats his teammate Stephon Castle’s shoulders as Castle answers questions after their Spurs’ victory over the Toronto Raptors at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, Oct. 27, 2025. Castle scored 22 points in the Spurs’ 121-103 win.
LOS ANGELES — Stephon Castle’s first comment when asked for his reaction to Bexar County voters approving a plan to finance a new arena for the Spurs consisted of just two words and a broad smile.
“Great news,” the 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year said Wednesday morning.
About 52% of voters approved devoting up to $311 million in county hotel and rental car tax dollars to help pay for a new $1.3 billion arena to be built at Hemisfair, according to unofficial election results from Tuesday’s election, per the San Antonio Express-News.
“It just shows how much the city is behind us and how much they care for our city,” Castle said after a walkthrough at Crypto.com Arena in preparation for the Spurs’ game against the Lakers on Wednesday night.
Public financing will cover 61.5% of the arena’s construction costs. The city has agreed to contribute up to $489 million through a combination of its share of state hotel taxes, property tax revenue from new development around the arena and ground leases for that development.
The Spurs have promised to contribute $500 million and cover cost overruns.
Castle noted the Frost Bank Center, the Spurs’ current home, will also benefit from the results of Tuesday’s election.
Prop A, which 56% of the voters approved, will devote up to $192 million in county tax dollars to renovate the Frost Bank Center, the Freeman Coliseum and surrounding facilities so the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo can host year-round Western events.
“It’s going to bring a lot of people together,” Castle said. “I’m happy about it.”
The promise of a new arena, in addition to the state-of-the-art practice facility they already have, could help the Spurs with recruiting free agents.
“If I hear a ‘new arena,’ and (with) the team we already have, with all the young talent we got, it’s definitely eye opening,” Castle said.
