Even with Dylan Harper out, Spurs in no rush to bring injured players

LOS ANGELES - Spurs coach Mitch Johnson answered with an emphatic “no” Sunday night when asked if the injury to rookie guard Dylan Harper would speed up the return of injured point guard De’Aaron Fox and a few of the team’s other ailing players.

On Tuesday, proof came that Johnson meant what he said in Phoenix in the form of the Spurs ruling out Fox (right hamstring strain) for Wednesday night’s game against the Lakers.

“One person’s status won’t affect anybody else’s,” Johnson said following the Spurs’ 130-118 loss to the Suns. “But guys have been getting closer and closer, so we’ll just have to see how it breaks in the next couple days.”

It apparently didn’t break well enough for Fox to make his season debut.

The Spurs also ruled out center/forward Luke Kornet, who has missed the last four games with a sprained left ankle, and, of course, Harper (left calf strain).

The club’s other injured players - forward Jeremy Sochan (left wrist sprain), forward/center Kelly Olynyk (left heel surgery) and guard Lindy Waters III (bilateral eye procedure) - have a “chance” to make their season debuts against the Lakers, a team spokesman said.

A decision will be made on the trio’s status after shootaround Wednesday morning.

Fox, Kornet, Sochan, Olynyk and Waters all participated in practice Tuesday at the University of Southern California’s Galen Center.

Of the four, the Spurs (5-1) are in the most need of Fox after Harper’s injury further depleted their backcourt and Kornet, who would provide a quality backup to help give Victor Wembanyama a breather after he’s averaged nearly 34 minutes through first six games.

But Wembanyama has been with the Spurs long enough to know the organization will never rush an injured player back onto the court no matter what the stakes are.

“I know for sure it will be smart and I am not expecting everybody to be back by tomorrow or anything,” the third-year All-Star said. “I’m excited (for them to return), but my job is not to make them heal quicker or plan for if they are here or not. It’s to do my job and be good on the court.”

The Spurs breathed a collective sigh of relief when an MRI on Monday in Los Angeles confirmed that Harper suffered no serious damage when he went down in the second quarter in Phoenix while attempting to defend Suns center Nick Richards in the paint. Still, the No. 2 overall pick is out indefinitely, a short-term blow for a team that benefited greatly from his solid early play on both ends of the court.

“He’s only been here for six games, but he’s been so valuable,” Wembanyama said of Harper, who was averaging 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 23.2 minutes while backing up Stephon Castle, who has been strong at the point in Fox’s absence. "We’re going to do just like if anybody else was missing, keep playing hard and figure it out.

“But it’s true that Dylan has been good so far.”

Said forward Julian Champaigne, “We’re definitely going to miss him. He’s a big scorer off the bench for us, getting like 14, 15 a game. It will be a little adjustment, but next man up. We’ve got guys who are ready to play. We’ll figure it out. I’m just happy he’s doing great and it’s not something worse.”

Like Wembanyama, Champagnie has come to expect the Spurs exhibiting an extremely cautious approach when it comes to getting injured players back on the court.

It’s a philosophy the fourth-year forward said he appreciates.

“The best part is we know they have our back,” Champagnie said of Spurs’ coaching and medical staffs. "They want us to play basketball for a long time and be healthy for the team ultimately. So, rushing a guy to come back to play, it is not going to do us no good. We’d rather go out there with what we have and trust what we have on the bench than force a guy to come back and potentially hurt himself some more.

“They take care of us real well with that kind of stuff.”
