Emulating Gregg Popovich, Bucks coach Doc Rivers speaks out about SNAP

Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers stands on the court during the second half of an NBA basketball game against the New York Knicks Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025, in New York.

In a manner reminiscent of former Spurs coach and social justice champion Gregg Popovich, Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers on Saturday delivered an impassioned two-minute statement about the need for SNAP funding to continue.

“The SNAP programs around the country — and especially in Wisconsin, because that’s where I’m at right now — are going to get delayed, and this is for Republicans and Democrats: We’re talking about kids not getting food,” Rivers said. “And that should never happen.”

President Donald Trump’s administration said Monday it will partially fund SNAP after two judges issued rulings requiring it to keep the United States’ largest food aid program running, the Associated Press reported.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, froze payments on Nov. 1 because it said it could no longer keep funding it during the federal government shutdown.

The program serves about 1 in 8 Americans and is a major piece of the nation’s social safety net.

SNAP costs more than $8 billion per month nationally. The government says an emergency fund it will use has $4.65 billion — enough to cover about half the normal benefits.

Rivers’ comments came before a game against Sacramento in Milwaukee.

“I don’t want to hear about ‘people are cheating the program’ and all that crap,” Rivers said, per the New York Times. “A 6-year-old, 7-year-old kid is cheating nothing, and we are going to cheat the kids if we don’t take care of this. Our Republican and Democratic senators and the government have not done their jobs. The problem is the kids have to pay, and that’s ridiculous.

“I think (with) everyone, there’s food banks, all kinds of places that we can donate money. We should. I am, I can tell you that. I’m telling my players to. I’m asking everyone to, and this should not be a political thing. This should not be about being a Republican or a Democrat right now; this is about our kids. And finally on that, truancy and hunger are the two biggest issues for kids learning in school, literally.

“They have proven that a kid can be in the worst area in the world, literally the worst area, but if he can just get
to school and eat, he can learn. So, we have to make sure that we feed our kids. We can drop all the other stuff, figure it out all later, but we gotta feed our kids.”

Like Popovich before him, Rivers, 64, often uses his news conference platforms to speak out about societal issues. In the preseason, he denounced mass arrests by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in his hometown of Chicago.

In response to the SNAP cuts, the San Antonio Food Bank has been preparing for thousands of additional clients in Bexar County, where about 284,000 people receive SNAP benefits.

The nonprofit serves 105,000 people per week, but Food Bank CEO Eric Cooper said he expects an additional 50,000 clients.

“That would be at some record levels for us and demand that is greater than what we experienced during the pandemic," he told Texas Public Radio.
