Spurs’ Dylan Harper leaves arena with aid of crutches, walking boot
PHOENIX - Spurs rookie guard Dylan Harper left Mortgage Matchup Center on Sunday night aided by crutches while wearing a walking boot on his left leg after suffering what the team called a calf injury in the second quarter of a 130-118 loss to the Phoenix Suns.
Harper, who the Spurs selected No. 2 overall in June after his freshman season at Rutgers, suffered the injury with 5:02 left in the first half.
“I hope the best for him,” said Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who was held to just nine points as the Spurs fell to 5-1 after forging the best start in franchise history.
Harper left the game with 12 points on 5 of 8 from the field and 2 of 2 from the free throw line in 11 minutes off the bench. He entered the game averaging 14.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists.
“We’ve seen great things from him,” Wembanyama said. “It’s actually been hard to believe how good he’s played.”
Harper appeared to sustain the injury when he went up to defend a dunk by 7-foot Phoenix center Nick Richards. The former Rutgers star grabbed at his lower leg after the play while grimacing in pain.
Harper hobbled to the locker room under his own power while being followed by Spurs general manager Brian Wright.
The Spurs announced at halftime Harper would not return. He returned to the Spurs bench in the second half in street clothes.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson had no further update on Harper after the game. He said Harper’s injury won’t force the team to speed up the return of their five injured players: De’Aaron Fox (hamstring), Jeremy Sochan (wrist), Luke Kornet (ankle), Kelly Olynyk (heel) and Lindy Waters III (eye).
Fox, Sochan, Kornet, Olynyk and Waters all made the trip to Phoenix.
Asked if any of them would return against the Lakers on Wednesday in Los Angeles, Johnson said, “I think we’re optimistic. There’s two more days. Again, it’s that funny part of the schedule, so you have almost 72 hours and everybody is trending the right way. But one person’s status won’t affect anybody else’s. But guys have been getting closer and closer, so we’ll just have to see how it breaks in the next couple days.”
