Carter Bryant to enjoy homecoming journey on Spurs road trip

San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant (11) drives to the net during the first quarter of the Spurs’ home opener against the Brooklyn Nets at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025. The Spurs defeated the Nets, 118-107.
PHOENIX – Spurs rookie forward Carter Bryant is set to enjoy a double homecoming on this trip to the Valley of the Sun and the City of Angels.
“It’s something you always dream about playing in, your home, and those are two places I refer to as home, Arizona and California,” Bryant said of the Spurs playing at Phoenix on Sunday and Los Angeles against the Lakers on Wednesday.
Bryant grew up in Riverside, Calif., in the Greater Los Angeles area and played his freshman season at Arizona in Tucson before the Spurs drafted him 14th overall in June.
Given his ties to the two areas, he’s counting on seeing plenty of family and friends in attendance at the games. He said he’s most looking forward to seeing his maternal grandmother, Shelly Freed.
“Just two places I spent practically my whole life in at this point, and I played a lot of good basketball there,” he said of Arizona and California. “I’m looking forward to it and I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to go back and play in front of my family and friends and more fans. But obviously, it’s all business. But I’m really looking forward to it.”
Bryant, 19, has played sparingly for the Spurs through the first five games, but he has delivered a few highlights in meaningful minutes, including recording his first NBA points by sinking a 3-pointer in the win over Toronto last Monday and swooping in from the weak side to block a driving layup attempt by the Raptors’ Ochai Agbaji.
“If I were not to score another point ever again, it would be dope,” he said of the 3 he drained in the second period. “But hopefully there’s a lot more buckets coming soon.”
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised Bryant for the way he’s handled his limited minutes.
“He’s been great,” Johnson said. "I think he is bright eyed, wet behind the ears, and he’s trying to do everything right. He’s making loud mistakes and I can’t wait for him to continue to just slowly learn he can make less of those mistakes and the game will slow down and he’ll be able to recognize patterns quicker and quicker.
“But I have no complaints with Carter Bryant.”

Spurs enjoying ‘crazy’ chemistry
One possible factor in the team’s 5-0 start is an offseason that included numerous open-gym workouts that helped the players bond.
Johnson, the seventh-year pro who ranks as the club’s longest-tenured current player, said the team is enjoying ‘crazy’ chemistry.
“I feel like everybody has the right intentions,” he said. “I’m not saying we didn’t have that the last few years, but I feel like as a collective group this year everybody’s on the same page and everybody knows what the goal is and what we’re trying to achieve and knowing what it takes as a team to be able to achieve those goals.”
So what’s the goal?
“We definitely want to be in the playoffs. That’s the goal,” he said.
If it is achieved, the Spurs will snap a six-year postseason drought, longest in club history.
