With heavy workload, Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama covets recovery time

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) drives through Miami Heat center Kel’el Ware (7) and Miami Heat guard Pelle Larsson (9) during an NBA game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025.
Averaging a career-high 33.8 minutes through the first five games of this season, Spurs star Victor Wembanyama covets his recovery time between games more than ever.
“Yeah, for sure, because this is why high-usage players get hurt more than low usage,” he said after logging a season-high 40 minutes in Thursday night’s taxing 107-101 win over the Miami Heat.
“They have to take care of recovery even more because when you do more things, there’s more muscles and more parts of your body that get sore and tight, so it’s even more important,” Wembanyama added. “But for all of us, we’re getting better at this as well.”
Thursday’s game was particularly taxing for Wembanyama because of the Heat’s up-tempo style of play and the number of pick and rolls he was involved in offensively.

“He was setting a ton of pick and rolls and rolling to the basket,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “And the pace they play at is at breakneck speed, so the game really didn’t stop, and it was a physical game on both ends in a good way.”
Johnson said he noticed fatigue taking a toll on the 7-foot-4 All-Star center in the fourth quarter.
“It felt like obviously in the fourth he got tired and you could see it visually, rightfully, so we took him out there for two minutes,” Johnson said. “But he came back and finished it off and I think it is commendable.”
Fortunately for the Spurs and Wembanyama, he has a few days to recover before they play at Phoenix on Sunday and then two days off in Los Angeles before facing the Lakers on Wednesday. He will enter the game against the Suns averaging 33.8 minutes, 30.2 points, an NBA-best 14.6 rebounds and a league-high 4.8 blocks.
Castle focuses on ball security
After committing a league-high 25 turnovers through the first four games of the season, Spurs point guard Stephon Castle concentrated on improving his ball security while watching film of those contests.
It was obvious the homework paid off because he committed just two turnovers while dishing out a team-high eight assists against Miami.
“I haven’t had really any problems with turnovers all camp, so it’s not something I was too worried about,” he said. “But, yeah, I definitely tried to not get lazy turnovers, just being smarter with the ball, especially in close games like this where we need those extra possessions.”
