Spurs make franchise history with 5-0 start
The Spurs desperately wanted to make history.
“We talked about it all day – ‘we got to get it done’ - so I’m happy we came through with it,” Stephon Castle said.
“It” was the franchise-record 5-0 start they achieved by holding off the Miami Heat for a 107-101 win on Thursday night before a sellout crowd of 18,702 at the Frost Bank Center.
Victor Wembanyama led the way with 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and five blocks in 40 minutes. Castle contributed 21 points and eight assists, and Devin Vassell finished with 17 points and nine rebounds.
But the big headline from this one was the historic nature of the game.
“It feels great,” Wembanyama said. “It’s not random. We didn’t get those five wins randomly. We worked for it.”
And they have their sights set on much more.
“It’s a long season," Vassell said. “5-0 is a historic start, but we’re not really happy or complacent with that.”
So what’s the goal?
“We definitely want to be in the playoffs,” said Keldon Johnson, who had 11 points off the bench. “That’s the goal.”
The 5-0 start also gave the Spurs their first five-game winning streak since the 2018-19 season when they won nine in a row from Feb. 27-March 18.
That season also marked the last time the Spurs made the playoffs.
“I feel silly seriously to talk about any level of these five games versus what this organization’s done in the past,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said, referring to the five championship seasons during the Tim Duncan Era. “But this group definitely gets credit. They’ve figured out ways to win the first five games, and it’s not going to get any easier.”
