De’Aaron Fox out, Spurs set to complete homestand still shorthanded

San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan and San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox watch their teammates take on the Brooklyn Nets in the Spurs’ home opener at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025. Both players sat out due to injuries.
Spurs fans will have to wait a bit longer to cheer on point guard De’Aaron Fox and a few other injured players at the Frost Bank Center.
Fox (right hamstring strain), forward Jeremy Sochan (left wrist sprain), forward/center Kelly Olynyk (left heel surgery) and guard Lindy Waters III (bilateral eye procedure) are still waiting to make their regular season debuts after the Spurs ruled them out for Thursday night’s home game against the Heat.
Forward/center Luke Kornet was also out, but he at least played in the first two games of the season - both on the road - before a left ankle sprain sidelined him.
Fox; Sochan, who also has been bothered by a calf issue; and Olynyk sat out the preseason. Waters played in four of the five exhibition games and Kornet played in all five.
With all five injured players participating in Thursday morning’s shootaround, signs point to at least a few of the injured players possibly returning when the Spurs are on the road next week to face the Phoenix Suns on Sunday and the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. And more could be back when the Spurs return home for back-to-back games against the Houston Rockets on Nov. 7 and the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 8 before hitting the road again for a game against the Chicago Bulls on Nov. 10.
The Spurs (4-0) will wrap up a three-game homestand against the Heat.
Of the four five injured players Olynyk might take the most time to integrate into the group because he has yet to see any action as a Spur since joining the team in an offseason trade.
But Mitch Johnson is confident he will eventually fit in nicely.
“He’s seen the whole league - I think he’s been with six or seven teams,” the coach said of the 13th-year journeyman, who is actually on team No. 8 with the Spurs. "Some (of those teams) have won a ton, some have lost a ton. He’s very skilled. He’s played a few different positions in terms of what his role’s been on certain teams he played with.
“And I think he’ll be someone we can fit with quite a few lineups and will really be able to help us as the season goes on.”
