San Antonio vs. Dallas, Final Score: Wembanyama dominates as Spurs win 125-92

Victor Wembanyama has gotten hype from just about everyone in the basketball world leading up to the opening night of the NBA season. He backed it up on opening night by dominating the Dallas Mavericks with 40 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks on 15-21 shooting in the San Antonio Spurs’ 125-92 victory. The superstar’s performance led the Spurs to their first opening-night victory since the 2019-20 season.

The Mavericks hung around for about 20 minutes, until the Spurs started to pull away at the end of the second quarter. San Antonio never looked back after establishing a 20-point lead in the third quarter.

They built their lead with stout defense that led to easy buckets on the offensive end. The Spurs held the Mavs to 37.3% shooting. They stole the ball 10 times and scored 19 points off turnovers. They owned the paint, outscoring Dallas 68-26 inside.

Wembanyama will get all of the attention with his stellar play, but his running mate, Stephon Castle, should get a lot of credit as well. The former Rookie of the Year was disruptive defensively, holding first-overall pick Cooper Flagg to just 10 points in his NBA debut. Castle had 22 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals in the win. Anthony Davis led the way for the Mavericks, putting up 22 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

The Spurs will look to improve to 2-0 in New Orleans against the Pelicans on Friday night.

Observations

  • Area 51 is back. Castle and Wembanyama’s chemistry was evident in the season opener. Castle was looking for the big man all night. He hit Wemby for a monster lob in transition in the second quarter. Their two-man game was evident in several of the Spurs’ actions. They used the twosome in dribble handoffs and pick-and-rolls to get Castle going downhill, then would use the guard as a screener to draw smaller defenders onto Wembanyama. Seeing the chemistry between the two crucial young players is encouraging.
  • The Spurs made a big second-half run thanks to some aggressive defense near the end of the quarter. With Wembanyama manning the back line of the defense, San Antonio’s wings were able to play aggressively in the passing lanes, swiping the ball from the Mavericks and scoring tough buckets in transition. When the front court is creating havoc, the Spurs’ transition game really shines.
  • The aggressiveness that Wembanyama showed in the preseason carried over to the regular season. Many times, he just powered through Dallas defenders on his way to a paint score and finished plenty of and-1s. His footwork and control are on another level than in previous seasons. He showed incredible touch on runners around the basket. Overall, he looks more in control of his body and composed than in his first two seasons. That’s a problem for the rest of the NBA.
  • Keldon Johnson was a beast on the boards, grabbing a pair of offensive boards. He’s a true burst of energy off the bench with his effort inside. With Dylan Harper running the show off the bench and Mitch Johnson staggering his lineups so either Castle or Vassell joined him, KJ was able to play off the ball more, where he could make an impact with his offensive rebounding and cutting.
  • The Spurs ran a lot of offense out of the “horns” set, with Wembanyama and Harrison Barnes filling the high post spots. They ran a bunch of dribble handoffs, some fades over the top for shooters like Vassell, and isolation plays for Wembanyama out of the set. The initial movement helped the Spurs easily get into their offense, get their guards going downhill and set up easy looks for Wemby.
  • Harper looked a bit nervous to start the game, but finally settled in late in the second quarter. The rookie had 15 points and 2 assists in the win. He continued to show his finishing skills around the hoop and made some nice passes in the half-court. He’ll be crucial to the Spurs having a successful second unit.

TD21: ‘The former Rookie of the Year was disruptive defensively, . .’
I think reigning Rookie of the Year has a nicer ring to it.

Brandon Meiners: Castle made Flagg’s debut a nightmare. Wemby was a nightmare for everybody. Harper was smooth after a rough start. Keldon played his role perfectly, particularly in the second half. He really attacked those boards. Vassell provided enough offense to keep the defense guessing. More importantly he was LOCKED IN on off-ball defense, playing the passing lanes well. Kornet was in foul trouble but had a solid second half. Spurs still have Fox and Sochan to unleash at some point. I am VERY HIGH on this team this season but make your free throws gentlemen! I also may not sleep much tonight. GSG!

Spurs101: Unreal from Victor, made Davis look like a bench player defensively. Not many players even around AD’s level defensively, the league should be terrified
Castle has taken a jump, his shot is still a work in progress but who cares? You can’t keep him out of the paint or off the free throw line. Defensively, hes already elite and gave a great “welcome to the NBA” lesson to Flagg
Harper was definitely nervous in that 1st quarter, rest of the game he looked like he belonged. You can see the potential there, having him off the bench is a luxury
This without Fox or Sochan is incredible. We’re back baby

spiceymeatball: Just a natural point guard. Wow. Harper’s burst is suprisingly elite. Never expected it coming into the NBA. Both he and Castle are going to be unstoppable from penetrating and wreaking havoc. Can’t wait to see what wrinkle in that Fox’s ability is going to do. We’re very deep at pg.
Castle - great defense. Unstoppable down hill. Shooting still an issue. Vassell, the best defense I’ve seen him play, perhaps ever.
Keldon - fantastic, great on the boards. Great help defense. Letting the game come to him.
Wemby: gobsmacking.

Veggiedelite: I could talk about this game for hours but it’s late and I’ve read enough comments to know it’s all going to be hashed out. For now go spurs go.

stormchaser4life: Heck of a game from Wemby. Just a heck of a game. I have never seen anything like him, with the exception of Wilt Chamberlain back in the day. But Wilt couldn’t shoot from 5 feet onward. Wemby can shoot and shoot it well. The only issue I have with Wemby is that he is playing point too much. No need for that. I have a feeling when Fox comes back that will change. The next player up is Castle. I think Castle is very underrated and I’m guilty of that myself. Castle is for real and should be an All Star this year. Incredible progress off his 1st year, but all his hard work in the off season has paid off. He’s ripped and when he goes downhill, he’s a freight train, who can finish. I also will pay Kudos to KJ. He showed up under the basket which was completely unexpected. Heck of effort under the basket and finishing second chance basket. You have to love this team. All scrap, all out effort. Great game! GSG!!!

SG21: Really enjoyed the game with everyone contributing in their own way! I loved how Victor is taking less 3 pointers (which was bugging me last season) and am looking forward to the sky hook materialising!
One play which made me so hyped was Keldon in the 4Q. Mismatched in a switch, he fought so hard to keep his position and boxed the opponent out (bearing in mind the lead we had). His mentality and attitude is awesome!
Go Spurs Go!!

pejoweho: It’s hard to not overreact to this kind of night, but I’m kind of feeling the same vibe as Kenny…
https://x.com/Wemby_Muse/status/1981215785834913899

SpinachBoy: Don’t forget Shaq’s one word for Vic: “Dominant”

Floyd Kizzie Jr.: We could not have asked for a better start, except at FT line. That will cost us games if not improved. So A -
GSG!

#8 in the Rafters: It will improve for sure, the important thing is we are GETTING to the line, something that couldn’t be said in the last couple years. The shots will start falling, let’s continue getting to that charity stripe!

SpinachBoy: I agree totally with you. With Wemby attacking the basket like Giannis, getting 10+ FTA… he’d easily avg 30+ ppg.
As well as Castle attacking the basket, drawing contacts like SGA does, if Castle hits those FTs at a 80% rate with 8-10 FTA each night, he’d easily avg 20+ ppg. Tonight if he hit 80%, he’d be 25pts.
Getting to the stripe is what made SGA’s stats up, the same goes with Giannis, and Giannis probably would be a 35+ ppg if he shoots 80% FT.

Pamarillo: Wemby had perhaps the most efficient game ever for a Spur since Tim Duncan obliterating the Nets in the finals.
Castle was a wrecking ball to the rim and disruptive defensively.
If this is as nervous as Harper will ever be then he has ice in his veins.
Vassell brought what the team needed.
Let’s stay humble though. Mavs played without a PG. Flagg had zero assists and the worst plus minus on the team for the Mavs. His 18 years showed.

GoBanana!: > Let’s stay humble though. Mavs played without a PG. Flagg had zero assists and the worst plus minus on the team for the Mavs. His 18 years showed.
This. Lots to be hyped about, but this was NOT top-tier team competition. And don’t forget fat AD. That said, Wemby’s dominance over their size was impressive.
Let’s see how we do against the best of the west, and over the course of a very long season. Loving what I’m seeing so far, though, especially without De’Aaron.

titra2: Fam: Kyrie was out, so was Fox. At the end of the day, it was a savy Mavs team, with solutions at every position (D’Lo is a steady hand, and a very good player). We were just much better.
mikrobass3: still, nice to see a dominant road win. the spurs have really struggled on the road against all teams during the wemby era, but not last night. perhaps a new mindset is taking over ~
zhouprodigy: Listen, I get caution, but you can feel some joy tonight. You can look at it as the Mavs not being top-tier, but you could also see this as the Spurs no longer being a bottom tier team.
Over the last two seasons, these comments have been filled with people complaining about how the Spurs didn’t take care of business against teams they should be able to beat, about a gaggle of role players simply not being good enough to even be on the team, about us losing big leads and our bench being unable to hold one/chip one away.
For one game, the team seems to have began to exorcise all of those demons, showing that “lip service” wasn’t the theme of the last few weeks. They truly believe they are a playoff team, and last night, they did what playoff teams do - beat the teams they’re supposed to beat (although those betting odds last night seem to indicate the Mavs aren’t exactly one of those teams).

4Him: Wemby started this season with a stat line that few have had in NBA history. It also included 71% shooting, 0 turnovers in only 29 minutes!
We know that Victor will also have games with a stat line that no one has ever had in NBA history. The sky is the limit.
Castle had his second straight game with 22 and 6.
Most importantly, the defense is already looking very good.
Also very important: The guys are coming together well, and we have great depth.
Victor has planted the flag on this season for the Spurs… happy days are here again!

ShikaUmaru2: The Wemby’s ascension into stardom and Castle’s rapid development help Keldon and Devin immensely.
Keldon turning back his Mustang style, providing energy and bench production. While Devin plays the opportunistic scoring and secondary playmaking. And has enough tank to play defense.
I know its early but bringing back Larry seems possible. GSG!!!

Harpers Castle: Helps to have proper point guards huh, Dallas?
What a statement from Wemby. He was literally cruising in for dunks and layups over Davis.
Castle, I knew he was going to beast out.
The longest offseason I can remember was worth the wait.

SpinachBoy: Wonder if they regret for taking Flagg over Harper?! Harper would have been a great fit for them since Kyrie is injured and not getting any younger.
But hey, I’m glad we got Harper!!!

#8 in the Rafters: This feels different y’all… let’s keep the good times running ALL year long.

Nicedoggie: My head is still spinning from how great Victor looks. If this is who he is now, holy moly. Has anyone won MVP, MIP, and DPOY in the same year? The rest of the league should be really scared. He made so many impossible-to-defend shots that game planning for him might basically come down to ‘hope he misses’ and scoring against him looks like it comes down to ‘stay 30 feet away from him’.
Castle had an amazing game, he looks like he just picked up right where he left off but better! For his first NBA game, Harper looked very good; I expect him to be a star and I hope Mitch can figure out how to play those two and Fox together. Fox is going to have to adjust somewhat and we’ll see how that goes. It could be great, it could be awkward.
The future backcourt of Harper and Castle looks unbelievable to me, they really have complementary styles and they will be immune to switching. To think we have those three all 21 or younger, it’s just incredible.

XXXRHONXXX: Hard to please Shaq says dominant. Nice very nice Mr. Alien Sir, also dominant was Air Castle playing his strength and impressive is young Harper :+1::+1: The future is bright. Keep it up young ones!
GO SPURS GO!!!

7David: Spurs win = Good day
Spurs blowout win = Very good day
Everyone, have a nice day!
Mood:

Tropicaldaze: Despite the glittering dazzle shown by our offense against the Mavs, it was the resolute stoutness of our defense that impressed me the most. The Spurs are going to create such problems for the rest of the league this year, and we’re just getting started.

BoboforHoF: 50-37 rebounding advantage.
Not missing many shots & making the other team miss a lot of shots is a good way to solve your rebounding concern.

SpinachBoy: > 50-37 rebounding advantage.
If this was called out before the game, no one would believe it… they have lot more tall players than us… we just have two 7 footer that’s all…

BoboforHoF: How about 68-26 advantage in points in paint? I doubt anyone saw that coming.

CanadianHeatFan: Dallas was favored.
I like the way the Spurs move the ball.

John Guano: Wemby is almost look pissed off of 2 years not getting in postseason also last year season cut in blood clot, so he let it all out in crazy off season journey and the preseason play and this opener. He’s aggressively angry in a positive way.

LebronsDad: Was so engrossed in the game and calling all my buddies didn’t have time to comment on the thread… but Wemby could legit win MVP. No BS. Not just mvp, but best player in the world status. He had easily the best performance in the association through two days and made a top 5 C defender look like a gleaguer. I have no words… the wait was worth it. Homecourt advantage here we come.

brunostrange: So I didn’t dream that Victor made AD and Lively look like chumps last night?

fuzzy_quack: Noice, Spurs +16 against the popular favorite margin. I know a single game etc., but watching this group makes me think we should have our first contention window in the W era sooner rather than later.

sdowns1470: What a great game. I didn’t see a blowout coming. Victor had himself a night. That was unreal. He gave us a highlight reel in the first game.
He was dominant. Castle made Cooper’s debut miserable. I don’t know what Jason Kidd’s thinking. He played Cooper at point guard.
Victor and Castle had 62 of our 125 points. That’s crazy. Area 51 is off to a good start this year. I am so ready for more of these kids.
Harper had himself a solid debut too. Kid’s going to be a force for a long time. Needs to work on his timing with fouls but he’ll learn. I can’t wait to see more of him in about 36 hours.

YoungQuakerBoy: Quietly, Kornet made it feel solid inside while Wemby was out.

camroc1: I loved listening to Mitch on the bench: Just do all the little boring things you’re supposed to do. Then do it again. Over and over. And they went out there and did it. No more lollygagging BS taking plays off. Compete on every play on both ends of the court. Take nothing for granted.
Victor, a man with a mission, set the tone and the whole team responded. Loved Devin’s effort, especially on Defense. KJ has apparently learned to play within his skill set. Harper, my goodness. He’s just a rookie? Gonna be a load.
And and and. What a start!
GSG

ElijahB: This was exactly what we’ve all been waiting for:smiling_face_with_sunglasses::black_heart::grey_heart::black_heart::grey_heart:

SteelersPensBucsSpurs: Unrealistic expectation, but would love to see Spurs avg <100 points allowed for the season. Keep this defensive intensity up against an offensive minded NBA

ElijahB: #WEMBY4MVP

ItCouldHappen: Shout out to Keldon with an absolute efficiency masterclass, 5 of 6 from the field (including making the only 3 he took), no TOs.

Nasty spurs ph: It looks like we are in for only 3 quarters of good competitive basketball for years to come

SpursRingChasingHOF: Looks like we will have a flexible lineup where pretty much anyone can play with anyone (I especially enjoyed the Harper-Castle-Vassell-Keldon-Kornet lineup we saw briefly in the 2nd half).
Loved:

  • Vassell playing with decisiveness
  • Castle the natural alpha
  • Bryant getting some early run against Flagg
  • Harper needing about one half of NBA basketball to adjust to the game
  • Mitch throwing out every possible lineup you could think of
    Needs work:
  • free throws (come on, Steph, when your game is tailored around getting to the line 8X/gm you need to shoot above 80% from the stripe)
  • Wemby still playing hero ball
But my god… Wemby is still doing 3-4 things every night which we’ve never seen before.
His combination of physical gifts, competitive drive, technical mastery and pure artistry on the court are unprecedented in the history of the league.
Can he average 40/15? I mean, I’m not going to be the one to say no.
Can we win 50 games? Absolutely. 60? Can’t rule it out. 70? Unlikely but with this guy there is no ceiling.
    Go Spurs Go

Brandon Meiners: > Wemby still playing hero ball
Agreed with pretty much everything except this. Please elaborate. He’s our MVP-candidate superstar who just made a top-tier defender in AD look like a normal dude. I’m sorry to say this isn’t going to be the 2014 Spurs. It’s going to be an offense built around mismatches, athleticism, and power.

TheGeezer: An embarrassment of riches. When Fox and Sochan and back, I don’t even know where we’re gonna put them.I mean, of course Fox immediately takes over the starting PG role, but then what? Castle to 2, Vassell to bench? Castle to 3, Champs to bench? Sochan to 4, HB to bench? I honestly have no idea, but we’ve gone from a team with serious holes to a team with some real decisions about who will be easiest to NOT play.

Nasty spurs ph: Could have been 40 pts blow out had we converted the free throws. FT is the only negative in this game. Penalized them Mitch with with 2000 reps per player.

Veggiedelite: Yall seeing these arrests on gambling charges this morning? Billups that’s a huge blow for the blazers if he is unable to coach

Newmexican: So many great performances and the most impressive? 0 turnovers for Wemby!
All that hand wringing in preseason gone in a flash!
GSG!

waynshor: Dallas team playing a lot without a PG.Makes things hard for them.
I liked Castle,Harper,DJG outside of Victor.
Good start.

Tavr4life: Great game by Spurs. The team is loaded with depth. Loved finally seeing an aggressive Wemby (hated watching him stand at 3pt line and just chuck up 3s last two years). Castle was amazing. Needs to work on free throws. Harper had a decent debut.
By the way, the rookie Edgecomb (third pick by 76ers) had 34 points tonight, 7 rebounds and 4 assists, highest score in a debut since 1959. Will we regret not picking him with our 2nd pick?? 76ers with Maxey, Edgecomb, Jared McCain is going to be an interesting core..

Floyd Kizzie Jr.: No we will not…
HRutherfordHill: Nope. And I love him, but Harp is gonna be a star and a great fit.
gregatronn: Being drafted by the Spurs definitely hurts Harper’s individual stats. VJ would be the same if he was playing tonight.

GSG!

https://x.com/Wemby_Muse/status/1981215785834913899

GSG!

#8 in the Rafters :

GoBanana!

GSG!!!

Harpers Castle :

#8 in the Rafters :

John Guano :

GSG

ElijahB : 这正是我们所有人一直等待的:smiling_face_with_sunglasses::black_heart::grey_heart::black_heart::grey_heart:

Nasty spurs ph :

Brandon Meiners : >

Nasty spurs ph :

GSG!

Floyd Kizzie Jr.
