What the Spurs are telling oft-injured Jeremy Sochan to keep his spiri

“Stay strong, man, stay strong.”

Spurs guard Devin Vassell has heard that encouraging message or ones similar to it several times during his five NBA seasons while fighting his way through various injury rehabs. Now, he’s passing it on to another oft-injured member of the team, forward Jeremy Sochan.

“You got to keep your mental strong,” Vassell said. "It’s tough, especially when you’re rehabbing and rehabbing and rehabbing. You get so close, then it’s another setback. It can be a lot on you mentally.

“But I think he knows we all have his back and we’re just excited for whenever he is able to come back.”

The Spurs are hoping it’s soon. They ruled him out for the season opener at Dallas on Wednesday after an MRI last week confirmed he sprained his left wrist during practice, an injury that occurred just as he was starting to do five-one-five work after being sidelined since August with a calf injury sustained while training with the Polish national team.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson sees a silver lining in Sochan’s latest setback. Several injuries, including ankle and thumb ailments that required surgery, have plagued Sochan after the Spurs selected him ninth overall in 2022 following his freshman season at Baylor.

“I foresee it actually being a way for him to get in just that much better shape and more prepared to play,” Johnson said. “Hopefully, it won’t be too long term.”

In addition to Sochan, the Spurs will be without guards De’Aaron Fox (hamstring) and Lindy Waters III (eye) when they face the Mavericks.

The Spurs have known for a while Fox would miss the opener and possibly another game or two, but Waters wasn’t added to the injury list until last Friday. He’s expected to return to the court sometime in early November after undergoing a minor laser procedure, a team spokesman said.

“It’s unfortunate because he’s had a great camp,” Johnson said of Waters.

Forward/center Kelly Olynyk is expected to be available in Dallas after missing the preseason while recovering from offseason heel surgery and helping at home with his wife and the couple’s newborn daughter. Guard Jordan McLaughlin (hamstring) should also be active after making his preseason debut in the Spurs’ 133-104 win over Indiana in the preseason finale on Friday, which left them with a 5-0 record, marking the first time in franchise history a team has gone undefeated in exhibition play.

In 11 minutes against the Pacers, McLaughlin had three points, three rebounds and a steal while fighting through the lack of game conditioning almost every player feels upon a return from injury.

“You can do as much conditioning as you want, but when you get in the game, it’s just different than running lines and doing drills,” McLaughlin said. “But I kind of started catching my second wind towards the end of my stint.”

As for Vassell, he’s in high spirits a year after foot surgery prevented him from making his 2024-25 season debut until mid-November.

“My numbers have been great,” said Vassell, who had 10 points, four assists, three rebounds, one steal and one block against Indiana in 23 minutes as a starter.

“I’m in shape,” he added. “I feel good. My body feels good. My knees feel good. This is the best I’ve felt in a long time, so I’m just excited for that. It’s been a good pre-season. I’m just excited to get this thing going.”

Johnson is also ready to get the season started after overseeing his first training camp five months after he succeeded Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich, who retired from coaching in May after suffering a stroke in November 2024. Johnson, a former assistant, served as acting coach for the final 77 games last season.

“I’ve been very pleased with the guys and their effort and their commitment and intention to do what we’ve asked,” Johnson said.
