Sending Kelly Olynyk, Jordan McLaughlin and a couple of second-round picks to Utah, the Spurs acquire Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love – two old Gregg Popovich favorites in San Antonio and on Team USA – making them older, slower, and better.

Feb. 15: Wembanyama is the Spurs’ only All-Star, but he’s named the game’s Most Valuable Player while leading the new “world” squad to victory at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. He catches a flight back to Texas with Castle, the new owner of the Slam Dunk trophy.
March 30: After sweeping a three-game road trip, the Spurs pummel Chicago at home to wrap up a 12-4 month, their best of the 2020s. The surge is aided in part by rookie Carter Bryant, who works his way into the rotation after an impressive few months in the G-League with the Austin Spurs.

April 30: In Game 6 in San Antonio, the Rockets’ edge in offensive firepower and postseason know-how finally proves to be too much for the Spurs to overcome. The Spurs lose the series 4-2, but Wembanyama is named the league’s defensive player the year and finishes fourth in MVP voting. Harper almost becomes the Spurs’ third consecutive rookie of the year, but falls just short of Dallas’ Cooper Flagg.
