INDIANAPOLIS – It is fair to say David Jones Garcia would not be a member of the Spurs were it not for his father.
David Apolinar Jones died of heart failure in February 2023 in his native Dominican Republic.
Before he did, Jones’ son made him a deathbed vow.
“I promised my dad I was going to play at least one game in the NBA,” Jones Garcia said. “I’m trying to keep that promise.”
That was the primary reason Jones Garcia fended off serious interest from teams in Europe this summer in order to sign a two-way contract with the Spurs.
It left the 23-year-old guard one step closer to keeping his word.
Jones Garcia made a further case for eventual NBA minutes Friday, when he scored all 20 of his points in the fourth quarter and overtime of the Spurs’ 134-130 preseason victory over Utah.
“He’s competitive,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “He is obviously dynamic with the basketball and has the ability to put the ball in the hole. If he can raise that other part of his game to match that, then he’s got a real chance.”
Jones Garcia’s competitiveness was on display down the stretch against the Jazz.
Johnson emptied the bench in the middle of the third quarter, leaving a collection of future G League players (plus veteran center Bismack Biyombo) to bring the game home.
Jones Garcia entered the fourth quarter scoreless, having missed both of his shots with a turnover to that point.
From there, Jones Garcia exploded to go 6 of 11 the rest of the way. He went 8 of 9 from the foul line and added five rebounds and four assists plus a key steal in overtime.
It marked a much-needed spate of productivity for a player who had turned in a quiet preseason to that point.
“It feels great to win,” said Jones Garcia, who will look to make the most of his time as the Spurs travel to Indiana for Monday’s preseason tilt. “I was just trying to win the game.”
The nature of Jones Garcia’s two-way contract means the Spurs will share him with their G League affiliate in Austin. He is likely to spend most of his time there.
Still, the chances of Jones Garcia finding his way to an NBA floor this season remain high.
The Spurs’ trio of two-way players last season – Riley Minix, Harrison Ingram and David Duke Jr. – combined for 12 appearances with the NBA club.
For now, Jones Garcia is doing everything he can to deliver on a promise to his dad.
“The Spurs is a great organization,” he said. “I’m blessed to be part of it.”
Wemby aims to force the foul issue
Through his first two NBA seasons, Victor Wembanyama has come to believe free throws are not free. They are earned.
One of his goals this season is to collect as many attempts as he can.
“The free throws are a byproduct of being able to use your body better,” Wembanyama said. “You get free throws only if you don’t fade every time. You go toward the basket.”
Wembanyama scored 22 points in one half against the Jazz, with nine of them coming from the foul line. He took 10 attempts in all.
Having averaged a little less that five free-throw tries per game during his first two NBA seasons, Wembanyama hopes to have more freebie-filled games like Friday’s in the season to come.
He understands at least some of that is up to him.
“Going toward the basket also means fighting the pressure of the defense and fighting against your own momentum,” Wembanyama said. “That takes strength and control.”
