Tony Parker Sr., the father of Spurs great Tony Parker, died Sunday night, his son said in a statement to Agence France-Presse.

Tony Parker Sr. was 70 and the elder Parker died at his son’s home, according to Tony Parker’s statement, per media reports.

“This passing leaves a huge void,” the Hall of Fame point guard said.

Parker Sr. played college basketball in his hometown of Chicago at Loyola University Chicago 1973 to 1977 before playing professionally overseas for more than 10 years in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.

Parker called his father “an inspiring father…a vital reference point…and a deeply loved figure,” according to several media outlets.

“I never forced my sons to play basketball,” Parker Sr. once said of Tony and his brothers TJ and Pierre.

“I don’t believe in that. I have three sons, and I let them grow up, giving them the freedom to choose what they wanted to do. Tony chose basketball. But it wasn’t until he saw Michael Jordan play where he finally chose basketball over football.”

During his 17-year career with the Spurs from 2001-2018, Tony Parker made six All-Star teams, earned five All-NBA selections, was the starter on four championship teams, won the 2007 Finals MVP trophy and twice finished in the top six for the league’s regular-season MVP award.
