除了布莱恩特,哈里森·英格拉姆 (Harrison Ingram)(演唱蕾哈娜的《Umbrella》)、迪伦·哈珀 (Dylan Harper)(演唱YoungBoy Never Broke Again的《Nevada》)、大卫·琼斯·加西亚 (David Jones Garcia)(演唱Bad Bunny的《Tití Me Preguntó》)和莱利·米尼克斯 (Riley Minix)(演唱加斯·布鲁克斯的《Friends in Low Places》)也登台献艺。

Carter Bryant wasn’t nervous when Keldon Johnson handed him the mic.

A case can be made that the 19-year-old forward had the best performance of all the rookies and young players who sang to the crowd of 10,576 after the Spurs Silver & Black Open Scrimmage on Saturday night at the Frost Bank Center.

The effervescent Johnson naturally served as the host for the Spurs’ version of a karaoke lounge. In addition to Bryant, Harrison Ingram (Rihanna’s “Umbrella”), Dylan Harper (“Nevada” by YoungBoy Never Broke Again), David Jones Garcia (Bad Bunny’s “Tití Me Preguntó”) and Riley Minix (Garth Brooks’ “Friends in Low Places”) also performed.

Bryant belted out Mario’s “Let Me Love You” with the ease of somebody who has the lyrics down pat, which was indeed the case.

“I’ve sung that song a million times in my mom’s car, full volume just screaming at the top of my lungs, so it wasn’t anything I needed to practice,” he said. “It was more so just not being so out of key that it sounded horrendous.”

The young players learned after practice Saturday morning they would sing following the scrimmage.

"At the end of practice, (Spurs coach) Mitch (Johnson) was like, ‘Oh yeah, Keldon has something to tell you guys.’ (Keldon Johnson) was like, ‘Oh yeah, you guys got to pick a song and sing in front of everybody.’ I was like,’ Oh, nice. Yeah, that’s fun.’

Bryant dismissed the notion that he was the best of the group.

“I wish I could sing,” he said. “If I could sing, that would be all of the infinity stones. That’d be nice. But I guess basketball is cool, too.”

The mini-concert was a hit with the fans, who delighted seeing all the players gathered on the court howling with laughter. Free agent signee Luke Kornet also had a great time at his first Silver & Black Scrimmage, which fans attend free of charge.

“We came out to shoot before and I was a little overwhelmed at the crowd and the energy,” the former Boston Celtic said. “I feel like everyone’s just really excited to be out there, so it was cool to get out in front of the fans for the first time. Obviously, we’ll be there again in a day or two (for Monday night’s preaseason opener against a team from China.) But, yeah, it was an awesome environment and a fun way to kind of start the season.”

Rookie in awe of Wemby’s play, personality

Like most players practicing with Victor Wembanyama for the first time, Bryant is stunned at times by what “The Alien” can do on the court.

“It’s marveling,” Bryant said. “You go into practice every day not knowing what he is going to do. He might pick up the ball from a step inside half court and go and dunk. It’s just understanding he’s capable of doing anything.”

But it’s not just Wembanyama’s otherworldly basketball skills that have impressed Bryant.

“The dopest thing is just how down to earth he is as a person,” Bryant said. "It’s been amazing. Everybody makes mistakes. He’s the first one to take accountability. Whether it’s his mistake or not, he’s the first dude on the floor to come talk to you. Whether you’re having a great day or a terrible day, he’s the one to lift you up. He’s never one to come get on your tail in a bad way. He’s going to demand the best out of you because he wants to be one of the best to ever do it, if not the best to ever do it.

“So, I’m right there with him. I want to push him to be there every day and see how far along I can get myself as well.”

Spurs say Castle ‘OK’ after collision

The Spurs had a scary moment when 2024-25 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle left the scrimmage in the second half after banging knees with Wembanyama, but a team spokesman said after the event the guard was “OK.”

Several players sat out the scrimmage, including Harper, the No. 2 overall pick who underwent thumb surgery in the offseason; De’Aaron Fox, who is recovering from an offseason hamstring injury; Jeremy Sochan, who suffered an offseason calf injury; and Kelly Olynyck, who had offseason heel surgery.

Devin Vassell (healthy scratch) and Jordan McLaughlin also did not suit up. Harper, Fox and Olynyck have been ruled out of Monday’s game as well.
