Spurs’ Kelly Olynyk to miss training camp start with heel injury

Add Kelly Olynyk to the list of Spurs players nursing injuries at the start of training camp.

The journeyman forward/center sat out the opening day of camp Tuesday while continuing to recover from what his former team, the New Orleans Pelicans, called minimally invasive surgery on his left heel and ultrasound guided tendon debridement in late April.

Olynyk is expected to start practicing later in the preseason and be available for the Spurs regular season opener at Dallas on Oct. 22, a team spokesman said. He spent Tuesday working on the side during practice.

The Pelicans said in a release at the time that Olynyk’s recovery timetable would be approximately three to four months.

In other injury news, point guard De’Aaron Fox (hamstring) and rookie guard Dylan Harper (thumb) were limited in practice.

Seeking to add depth behind star center Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs acquired Olynyk on July 9 in a trade that sent guards Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley, along with a 2026 second-round draft pick, to the Washington Wizards.

The Spurs hope Olynyk along with free agent signee Luke Kornet, formerly of the Boston Celtics, can give them quality depth behind Wembanyama. Last season, the Spurs struggled for the final two months of the season with rebounding and interior defense after a blood clot in his right shoulder sidelined Wembanyama.

While the 7-foot-1, 270-pound Kornet, 30, is a traditional big who excels at rim protection, the 6-11, 250-pound Olynyuk, 34, can stretch the floor as an efficient perimeter threat either at the four or five spot.

Olynyk averaged 8.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists last season, a campaign that included stops in Toronto and New Orleans. For the season, he hit a career-high 41.8% from the 3-point line on nearly two attempts per game.

The 12-year veteran owns career averages of 10.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 37.1% from beyond the arc on 3.1 attempts. He has appeared in 48 career playoff games.

“I’ve played against Kelly a lot over the years,” Kornet said after practice Tuesday. “He’s just a really smart and really capable basketball player who knows how to connect guys (with his passing) and is just very talented in different ways and provides a unique way to play as a team. He definitely gives a pretty new and specific tool for the team to be able to play through him and play with him. His intelligence and leadership is something that’ll be super valuable on the court.”
