Dan Weiss announced as new radio voice of the San Antonio Spurs

There was more than just roster and coaching spots to fill this offseason. Back in April, the longtime radio voice of the San Antonio Spurs, Bill Schoening, announced his retirement after 24 years of service without ever missing a game, which included covering four of the Spurs’ five championships. Now, they have announced his replacement, and it should be a familiar face to everyone: sideline and studio announcer Dan Weiss.
Per the Spurs’ official press release:
The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Dan Weiss, who has been with the organization since 2009, will become the radio play-by-play voice of the San Antonio Spurs beginning this upcoming 2025-26 season. Dan has spent the past seven years as the studio host of Spurs Television’s pregame and postgame coverage and now will succeed longtime broadcaster Bill Schoening who retired following the 2024-25 campaign.
A native of Weston, Massachusetts and graduate of Northeastern University, Dan Weiss joined SS&E in 2009 as the play-by-play voice of the San Antonio Rampage hockey team, a role he held until 2018. During his tenure, he was recognized with the James H. Ellery Award in 2013-14 for outstanding coverage of the American Hockey League and was selected to be part of the NHL Network’s broadcast of the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic. He also contributed to broadcasts for the Austin Spurs and the San Antonio Stars during that time. Prior to his positions in San Antonio, Weiss built an accomplished broadcasting career, serving as the play-by-play voice of the Phoenix Mercury, Phoenix Roadrunners, Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies and Corpus Christi Ice Rays. He was honored by the ECHL as Broadcaster of the Year in 2005-06.
“Dan has the experience and knowledge to seamlessly carry the tradition of excellence Bill built over two decades,” said Mike Kickirillo, Senior Director of Broadcast at SS&E. “He’s been a beloved piece of the Spurs fan experience for years now, and we’re excited for Dan to make this new role his own, bringing his energy, preparation and love of the game to every broadcast.”
“It is an honor and a privilege to wear the headset that only six people have worn since the Spurs arrived in 1973,” said Weiss. “From Terry Stembridge to Bill Schoening, Spurs radio has established a legacy and tradition of excellence in both our community and around the world that I look forward to continuing.”
All Spurs games can be heard on WOAI 1200-AM, now with play-by-play from Dan Weiss. Television broadcasts will continue to air on FanDuel Sports Network Southwest and the FanDuel Sports Network app, with a new pre- and postgame host to be announced soon.
Not only has Weiss been the studio announcer for the Spurs the last several years, but he also has filled in as the TV announcer alongside Sean Elliott when Bill Land or, beginning last season, Jacob Tobey was off. This was especially true during the 2023-24 season, when Land missed most road games while receiving treatment for a form of blood cancer.
Weiss’ move to the radio side will leave a hole in the studio to fill, so we should learn more soon. One thing is for certain: clearly being the Spurs’ studio host is a good career stepping stone. Weiss’ predecessor in that position, Andrew Monaco, also went on to have a career in radio broadcasting, in his case as the voice of Texas A&M Athletics.
Congratulations to Dan!
I’m truly honored and grateful to join the legends who have called @ spurs radio, most notably my friend Bill Schoening! He set a high bar at 2,280 straight broadcasts that likely will never be matched, but I look forward to delivering the same excellence he brought every game! pic.twitter.com/OBO7GZmbs3
