The Spurs entered the summer free agency period with two pressing needs to address.

The first – a lack of big man depth behind franchise cornerstone Victor Wembanyama – the club addressed by signing former Boston center Luke Kornet and trading with Washington for Kelly Olynyk.

This week, Spurs general manager Brian Wright has made a pair of moves meant to partially patch the roster’s other glaring hole – a dearth of players who can consistently make the ball go in the basket from long distance.

A day after agreeing to a two-way deal with Summer League sensation David Jones-Garcia, the Spurs on Wednesday came to terms on a one-year contract with journeyman shooting guard Lindy Waters III.

Neither transaction will shake the NBA off its axis, but both players could help bolster a Spurs 3-point attack that ranked in the bottom third of the league last season by percentage.

The 27-year-old Waters has played with three teams during a four-year NBA career (Oklahoma City, Golden State and Detroit), while hitting 36.6% of his 3-point tries.

Waters’ best season from deep came in 2023-24, when he made 43.5% from beyond the arc over 38 contests.

Undrafted out of Oklahoma State in 2021, Waters worked his way to the NBA through Oklahoma City’s G League affiliate. He joined the Thunder’s NBA squad on a two-way contract in February 2023 and has shot well enough to remain in the league ever since.

News of Waters’ deal came a few hours after the Spurs locked in Jones-Garcia, the breakout star of their Summer League team, on a two-way contract.

The Dominican guard, who logged a 51-point game in the G League last season with the Mexico City Capitanes, averaged 22 points across eight Summer League games while hitting a scorching 53% from 3-point range.

He was named to the all-tournament team at both the California Classic and Las Vegas Summer Leagues.

“He is a phenomenal player,” Spurs Summer League coach Mike Noyes said of Jones-Garcia. “He belongs on an NBA court.”

It is possible Jones-Garcia might soon get the chance.

He will fill one of the Spurs’ three open two-way slots, meaning the 6-foot-3 guard will be shared with the G League but available for a maximum of 50 NBA games next season.

Waters’ deal, meanwhile, will bring the Spurs to 14 standard NBA contracts on the roster, one less than the league maximum.
