Dylan Harper believes Spurs ‘can compete with anyone’ this season
LAS VEGAS – Given the moves the Spurs have made this offseason, including selecting him second overall in the draft last month, Dylan Harper believes the club can make some noise this coming season.
“You look at the roster top to bottom, I think we can compete with anyone in the league,” Harper said after recording 16 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block in the Spurs’ 76-69 win over Dallas on Saturday at the Las Vegas Summer League.
“We’re having that mindset. (Center Luke Kornet and (forward/center Kelly Olynyk) are two great pickups. We’re just going to keep stacking days.”
The Spurs are also banking on having a healthy Victor Wembanyama after the 7-foot-3 All-Star missed the last two months of last season due to a blood clot in his right shoulder. They should also benefit from having guard De’Aaron Fox go through training camp with the team after the Spurs acquired him just before the trade deadline last February from Sacramento in a three-team deal.
In addition to Harper, the Spurs are expected to receive a boost after going 34-48 last season from another injection of youth in the form of rookie forward Carter Bryant, who they selected 14th overall. They also have Stephon Castle, last season’s Rookie of the Year.
Harper’s optimism is in keeping with a message he delivered at his introductory news conference in San Antonio last month to fans eager for the franchise to end its six-year playoff drought.
“That’s going to change really quick,” Harper said. “We’re going to make the playoffs. I think for the Spurs fans and everyone else, our group is very exciting. There’s a lot to look forward to. The sky’s the limit for this group we’ve got.”
Those comments came before the Spurs signed Kornet and traded for Olynyk.
Jones-Garcia puts team first
Spurs Summer League coach Mike Noyes praised team scoring leader David Jones-Garcia for his willingness to move to the bench Saturday to make room for Harper in the starting lineup.
"He said, ‘I’ll do whatever is best for the team,’ " Noyes said. “That just speaks to who he is. He’s been so good for us. He is a great person, great player.”
Jones-Garcia, a 23-year-old G League veteran from the Dominican Republic, scored 21 points against the Mavericks after tallying 24 in a 111-70 rout of Philadelphia last Thursday in the Spurs’ Vegas opener. In San Francisco last week, he earned All-California Classic honors after averaging 22.7 points over three games.
“Basically, super reliable every game,” Noyes said of Jones-Garcia, who is vying for a two-way contract with the Spurs. "I told the guys pregame, he’s been arguably our best player.
“He belongs on the NBA court. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.”
Bassey auditioning with Boston
Big man Charles Bassey, an unrestricted free agent after three injury-plagued seasons with the Spurs, is getting an audition from the Boston Celtics.
Bassey, who played high school ball at St. Anthony in San Antonio, had 14 points and 11 rebounds to help the Celtics claim a 92-78 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday in their Vegas opener.
Bassey told reporters after the game he joined Boston for Summer League at the “last minute” after getting a call from his agent.
“It’s been good,” he said, adding it was the Celtics’ “culture” that prompted him to sign a training camp deal with the team.
In 18 minutes off the bench, Bassey also registered two blocks and hit 7 of 8 from the field.
Bassey averaged 4.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 10.4 minutes over 36 games last season. The fourth-year pro returned to the Spurs last October after a 10-month absence due to a torn left ACL he suffered in a G League game in December 2023. He fractured a patella in the same knee in March 2023 and missed the final 14 games of the 2022-23 season.
Bassey played in just two of the Spurs’ final 27 games last season due to a sprained MCL and a bone bruise in his left knee.
Team show support for flood victims, families
The Spurs and the Mavericks wore “Texas Strong” T-shirts while warming up before Saturday’s game in support of the flood-ravaged Hill Country and Central Texas.
The teams, along with the NBA, the NBA Players Association and the Houston Rockets, joined forces last week to commit more than $2 million to immediate and long-term relief to flood-relief funding.
The death toll in Kerr and Travis counties has risen to at least 129, with more than 160 people missing from Kerr County alone.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to those families who lost someone,” Harper said. “Just want to show that we got their back to the fullest.”
