LAS VEGAS — Carter Bryant nodded when told that Spurs assistant coach Mike Noyes said after a recent Summer League game the rookie forward was “way too hard on himself."
“When you want to be great at something, you have to be relentless with it,” Bryant said.
“I don’t think it’s me being too hard on myself. I just care about the game of basketball a lot. I’ve put a lot into it. My family sacrificed a ton for me to get to this position, so there’s no reason for me to kind of, for lack of a better term, half-ass it.”
The 19-year-old Californian’s passion for the sport and competitive drive factored into the Spurs selecting him 14th overall in last month’s draft. They love his 6-foot-7, 220-pound frame, 3-point stroke and defensive skills, but his serious approach might be his best asset.
“He plays so hard, and he cares so much,” said Noyes, head coach of the Spurs’ Summer League squad. “He’s intense. He’s about all the right things. He wants to win. The future is bright for him. We are so happy he’s in a Spurs uniform.”
Bryant has struggled at times during Summer League, but that’s understandable for a kid who mainly came off the bench as a freshman at Arizona last season and is adapting to playing against what he called “grown men.”
“For me, it’s just growing, getting better, but also understanding it’s been 15 days since I got drafted,” he said Thursday. “There’s so much more time to go and so much more for me to learn on a daily basis.”
The Spurs coaches agree.
“This is not about him playing great or terrible,” Noyes said. “It’s about him getting better and getting used to things. … He’s going to have success. That’s how you learn.”
Young players also learn by poring over the playbook. Given his obsessive nature when it comes to basketball, Bryant should have a good grasp of it by the time training camp starts in October.
“When you’re obsessed with the game of basketball, that’s something that’s going to come easy because you’re going to look at it over and over again,” Bryant said. “You’re going to watch film constantly. You’re going to make adjustments. You’re going to watch film and go back and see what you did wrong. See how you can get better.”
Bryant showed improvement Thursday night following a rough outing in the Spurs’ 89-88 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday in their final game at the California Classic in San Francisco.
With Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox and several other Spurs veterans looking on in front row seats at Thomas & Mack Center, Bryant had a strong showing defensively in the Spurs’ 111-70 rout of Philadelphia in their Las Vegas Summer League opener.
Playing well on the ball and in team defense, Bryant finished the first half with three blocks, including two under the rim on one possession. He also forced a backcourt violation while defending 76ers forward Jalen Slawson on the perimeter.
In 19 minutes, Bryant collected five points, five rebounds, three blocks, two assists and one steal. He hit just 1 of 6 from the field, including 1 of 4 from 3-point range, but that didn’t matter to Noyes.
“Carter played excellent and I don’t care how many points he scored,” Noyes said. “He was worried about the right things. He focused on defense and it was great to see him smiling out there today. He was having fun. He’s one of those guys who cares so much about not just his success but helping the team, and sometimes you got to just relax a little bit.
"He did that tonight. He was terrific.”
And he continued to learn.
“Everything we do, we got to learn from it, whether it’s good, bad or indifferent,” Bryant said. “That’s sort of my mentality toward everything. But it’s nice to have a few games under the belt, to understand the physicality, the speed of the game, all those things, get adjusted to the (3-point line). The line is a little further (than it is in college), so most of my shots were short.”
Given the still raw, developing nature of his game, Bryant could see time with the Austin Spurs in the G League early in the season, which he said would be just fine with him.
“Whatever the staff needs me to do, I’m going to do it,” he said.
And it’s certain he will do it in a “relentless” manner.
