Who is Spurs Summer League coach Mike Noyes?
San Antonio Spurs head coach Mike Noyes about to address the team prior to the The California Classic for the San Antonio Spurs versus the Miami Heat at the Chase Center in San Fransisco, California on July 5, 2025.
SAN FRANCISCO — When Harrison Ingram joined the Spurs as a second-round draft pick last summer, one of the first people he met was Mike Noyes, the team’s new director of player development.
The eager-to-learn Ingram and tirelessly energetic Noyes soon became sutured at the hip.
“I’ve probably spent more time with him than I’ve spent with my mom and dad,” Ingram said.
With Noyes tabbed to run the Spurs’ Summer League squad in San Francisco and Las Vegas, that bond only stands to strengthen.
The opportunity is a heady one for Noyes, a 30-year-old NBA up-and-comer who joined the Spurs’ staff last season after spending six years in Memphis.
His goals for the Summer Spurs are no different than those coach Mitch Johnson will have for the NBA Spurs once training camp opens in the fall.
“We want to represent the Spurs to the highest level we can, compete together, and we want to win,” Noyes said. “I’m in different shoes right now, but the mentality is the same.”
Under Noyes, the Spurs opened the California Classic at 1-1 heading into Tuesday’s finale against the Los Angeles Lakers at the Chase Center.
The lights will grow brighter later this week, as the summertime circus moves eastward for the start of the 30-team Las Vegas Summer League beginning Thursday.
Summer League represents a development opportunity for the Spurs’ director of player development as well. A handful of past Spurs’ summer coaches have gone on to become NBA head coaches, including Ime Udoka, Mike Budenholzer, Will Hardy, Jacque Vaughn.
And Johnson will take over for the legendary Gregg Popovich full-time this season. Becky Hammon went from guiding the Summer Spurs to becoming a two-time championship-winning coach in the WNBA.
It is a track Noyes would not mind mimicking in time.
“I still have a lot to learn,” Noyes said, “but I feel like I’m well-prepared for this opportunity.”
The youngsters on Noyes’ Summer League team, meanwhile, are still waiting for their irrepressible coach to have a bad day at the office.
It hasn’t happened yet.
“He’s one of those guys who never has a down day,” Ingram said. “He’s always energetic.”
Had life taken a different path for Noyes, he might have ended up becoming the most effervescent actuary in all of New England.
Noyes grew up in Granby, Conn., a flyspeck town of less than 11,000 souls nestled half an hour northeast of Hartford and half an hour southeast of Springfield, Mass., home of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
After a standout prep career that included a state championship for Granby High in 2013, Noyes eschewed offers to play point guard for a handful of Division III colleges and instead opted to attend Connecticut as a student.
At UConn, Noyes walked onto the basketball team and majored in actuarial science.
“It’s a fancy word for math,” Noyes said.
Noyes eventually earned a scholarship from then-Huskies coach Kevin Ollie and got his master’s degree in financial math.
Upon graduation in 2018, Noyes was set to begin his professional career as an actuary at the Hartford, a well-known insurance and financial company based in Connecticut’s state capital.
Three days before his first day, the Memphis Grizzlies came calling with an offer for him to join J.B Bickerstaff’s staff as a data scientist.
Given the chance to marry his two greatest interests — math and basketball — Noyes decided life as an insurance actuary could wait.
“It combined my analytical background with the basketball background,” Noyes said. “I was super excited.”
When Bickerstaff was fired after the 2018-19 season and replaced by Taylor Jenkins, the Grizzlies kept Noyes aboard.
He rose through the ranks in Memphis, becoming a video coordinator and then a player development coach.
“I wore all sorts of hats,” Noyes said. “I think that has equipped me well to handle whatever’s in front of me.”
The Spurs snatched Noyes away last summer to lead a player development program that will be critical as the franchise looks to build out a young team around burgeoning star Victor Wembanyama.
One of the first things Spurs players noticed about Noyes is that he does not seem to come with an “off” button.
“He’s been with me every step of the day,” Ingram said. “I’ve seen the hours he’s put in. He’s there early. He leaves late. He really works hard at this.”
Don’t let Noyes’ endlessly positive personality fool you. He is also viciously competitive, players say.
“He competes at everything we do,” second-year forward Riley Minix said. “We were playing cornhole the other day, and he was competing at that. He’s the ultimate competitor that wants to win.”
At NBA Summer League, winning often takes a backseat to player development.
In the hands of Noyes, the Spurs are hoping to accomplish both.
