Spurs’ Harrison Ingram aims to stand out by fitting in

SAN FRANCISCO – Spurs forward Harrison Ingram was at the Chase Center interview podium after Sunday’s 90-88 Summer League victory over Golden State, when an unruly fan passed by to interrupt the proceedings.

“Harrison!” the disruptive teenager hollered. “You’re my favorite player!”

Newly drafted rookie Dylan Harper has not been here two weeks and has yet to play in a game for the Spurs this summer. Still, Harper has clearly come to learn what those who have been around the team for the past 12 months already know.

Ingram is a favorite of the Spurs’ coaching staff too.

“He’s put in so much work over the last nine weeks,” said Mike Noyes, the Spurs’ Summer League coach. “He’s been in the gym as much as anyone on our team. Everything we’ve worked on throughout the summer, it’s carrying it over into the game.”

It stands to be a significant summer for the 22-year-old Ingram, who the Spurs drafted 48th overall out of North Carolina and spent his rookie season on a two-way contract shared with the G League’s Austin Spurs.

Limited to playing only first halves in the Spurs’ first two games at the California Classic due to a mild groin strain, Ingram has been a steady presence if not an eye-popping one.

The 6-foot-6 Ingram collected eight points, six rebounds and a pair of steals Sunday against the Warriors, then took a seat after 14 minutes.

Players in their second NBA Summer League tend to want to break out, to show coaches something, to do something flashy to force an organization’s hand.

And that is not Ingram’s bag at all.

“I’m not an iso guy,” Ingram said. “I’m going to get rebounds. I’m going to hustle. I’m going to make open threes and get steals and be in the right place at the right time.”

Ingram hopes that substance-over-style approach will lead to a longer-term future with a franchise that traditionally has valued precisely that.

After nearly averaging a double-double last season in the G League (12.8 points, 9.5 rebounds), the 6-foot-6 Ingram entered the summer as a free agent. He is restricted, meaning the Spurs have the right to match outside offers for him.

Ingram’s top goal in Summer League is to earn another contract, even a second two-way deal.

The Spurs like what they have seen so far.

“He knows what he has to do to impact NBA winning,” Noyes said of Ingram.

Sunday against the Warriors, that meant a couple of field goals. It meant four free throws.

It also meant the correct swing pass to guard David Jones Garcia for a 3-pointer in the first quarter. It meant scampering down a defensive rebound in the corner. It meant a textbook block out to secure the rebound on a missed Warriors free throw.

It is not the kind of stuff that will show up on YouTube highlight reels, but it is the kind of fundamental play that makes coaches swoon.

“That’s one of the tougher parts of Summer League,” Noyes said about Ingram’s ability to stay within himself. “Guys are in a role that is not exactly the role that’s going to make them successful in the NBA. Some guys, they may be the best creator for this team, but that might not be what gets them minutes on a team where you have De’Aaron (Fox) and Victor (Wembanyama) and Steph (Castle).”

For Ingram this summer, the goal is to stand out by fitting in.

He will get another chance at that Tuesday, when the Spurs close their stay in San Francisco with a contest against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Ingram is expected to be medically cleared to play in both halves of the California Classic finale. Then it is on to Las Vegas for the summer’s main event.

There as it was in San Francisco, Ingram does not care about being a fan favorite. He only wants to be a coaches’ favorite.

“They’re very clear here about what they want from players, what they need from the team,” Ingram said. “I’m going to play as hard as I can and do the best as I can with that.”
