In San Francisco, Spurs’ hearts are with the Hill Country

SAN FRANCISCO – As members of the Spurs’ traveling party landed in San Francisco for the start of summer league Friday, they were shocked by the images of destruction coming from back home.

The news only got worse in the wake of flooding in central Texas and the Hill Country, with the death toll rising as the waters recede.

“It’s devastating,” Spurs summer league coach Mike Noyes said before the Spurs’ opener against Miami at the Chase Center on Saturday. "We love our jobs and it’s great playing basketball, but it’s a game. There are real-life things going on this world.

"To all the people who have been impacted by it, I cannot imagine what is going through their heads and how they are dealing with it. We want them to know that the Spurs organization and the Spurs family, we’re thinking about them and praying for them.”

As of Sunday afternoon, at least 70 people had been confirmed dead. Dozens more were still missing as authorities continued search operations.

Organizers of the California Classic began the first game Saturday with a moment of silence to recognize the victims.

The Spurs organization released a statement via its social media channels offering thoughts for those affected.

“We’re heartbroken by the tragic flooding in the Hill Country,” the statement read. “To every family grieving and every first responder helping others through the worst, please know the Spurs family is with you and holding you close in our thoughts. Our hearts are especially heavy for the children and their families whose lives have been forever changed.”

Draft-night trade completed

In a bit of transactional housekeeping Sunday, the Spurs finalized a minor draft-night trade that sent the 38th pick to Indiana.

In the pre-arranged deal, the Pacers received the rights to Kameron Jones, a guard out of Marquette. The Spurs acquired a 2030 second-round pick and cash considerations.

Sunday marked the end of the NBA’s summer moratorium on new business, meaning trades and free-agent signings could be finalized and formally announced.

The Spurs have one transaction left in the league’s hopper. The club is expected to complete a four-year, $41-million deal with free agent center Luke Kornet from Boston.

Ingram limited in summer debut

Spurs forward Harrison Ingram was limited to 12 minutes and 25 seconds of playing time in the Spurs’ summer leaguer opening loss to Miami. The restriction was by design, Ingram is working his way back from a minor groin ailment.

“It was very precautionary," Noyes said. "If we had needed him the whole day, he would have went. The plan was for to play him 12 or 14 minutes and that’s it.”

Ingram, a former second-round draft pick entering his second pro season, started against the Heat and produced three points, five rebounds and three steals. He did not play after halftime.

The plan for Ingram heading into Sunday’s back-to-back finisher against Golden State was unclear leading up to game time.

With No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper also on the shelf with a groin issue, Ingram is one of two past or current Spurs draft picks scheduled to appear in San Francisco.

Carter Bryant, the No. 14 pick in last month’s draft, notched seven points in 21 minutes in the opener against the Heat.
