Spurs’ Carter Bryant sees ‘room for improvement’ in debut

SAN FRANCISCO – For most of his 19 years, Carter Bryant had waited for this moment.

On the floor at the Chase Center in San Francisco, the Spurs’ name stitched across his chest, awaiting tipoff of his first NBA game.

A scoreboard malfunction wasn’t part of the dream.

Twenty-seven seconds after his professional career officially began Saturday – in a Summer League game against Miami – Bryant had to wait again, this time for arena staff to get a frozen video board back online.

“It’s part of the game,” Bryant said of the false start. “Stuff is going to happen every once in a while.”

Bryant and the Spurs are willing to file much of what happened during Saturday’s 82-69 loss to the Heat under the heading of “stuff happens.”

The 14th pick in last month’s draft experienced a debut that was hit or miss – but mostly miss.

Nobody is sweating Bryant’s tentative beginning.

“It went as expected,” Spurs Summer League coach Mike Noyes said. “That first game, you always have so much energy. It’s a little bit of nerves and excitement.”

Bryant, a 6-foot-7 forward from Arizona, was the highest-drafted player on the floor for the Spurs on Saturday.

The other member of the club’s 2025 draft class – No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper from Rutgers – is out with a mild groin issue at least until the Las Vegas Summer League later next week.

Bryant ended his maiden NBA adventure with seven points and five rebounds. He went 3-of-8 from the floor, including 1 of 6 from the 3-point arc.

One of those long-range misfires in the fourth quarter stuck between the rim and backboard, a so-called “wedgie.”

In a turn of events that can only happen at Summer League, Bryant also picked up seven fouls. Players are allowed 10 in Summer League competition.

“He picked up a bunch fouls, which I don’t care about,” Noyes said. “I’d rather err on the side of being aggressive. At the end of the day, he’s out there competing. He cares so much. We’ll keep getting better.”

Bryant seemed unfazed after the game, vowing to make adjustments for the Spurs’ second game in San Francisco, Sunday against the host Golden State Warriors.

“It was always going to be tough the first time out playing against grown men,” Bryant said. “Guys are going to be smarter, faster, stronger than you. Everything was a learning experience.”

As for all the fouls, Bryant wasn’t as eager to let himself off the hook as his coach was.

Aggressive mistakes are OK, Bryant said.

“It’s got to be a smart aggressive,” Bryant said. “A lot of them were dumb aggressive mistakes. The biggest thing for me is making that adjustment moving forward.”

In between the fouls and the misfires, Bryant showed glimpses of why the Spurs opted to use the second of their two lottery picks on him.

He missed his first 3-point attempt of the afternoon, but after Harrison Ingram snagged the rebound, Bryant made his first NBA bucket on a contested shot from distance.

Later, Bryant knocked down a pair of feathery mid-range jumpers to add to his point total.

The team has asked Bryant to showcase his defense this summer, and he mostly accomplished that while matched against Miami’s Kasparas Jakucionis, the 20th pick in the draft.

“We have the utmost confidence in him,” Noyes said.

Bryant vows to make the Spurs’ confidence in him pay off, starting Sunday against the Warriors.

In a way, Bryant got exactly what he anticipated out of his long-awaited NBA debut Saturday.

There were some good things. There were some rough moments. And no matter what, there was still a lengthy to-do list to accomplish going forward.

“If I had scored 40 or scored zero, there’s always room for improvement,” Bryant said. “This one game is not going to define my whole career.”

In fact, by Sunday it was largely forgotten. There was another game to play.
