SAN FRANCISCO — For much of the past week and a half, Spurs rookie Carter Bryant has struggled to keep his head from spinning around in circles.
One day he is in Brooklyn for the NBA draft, not knowing where he might be headed next. Two days later, he is in San Antonio, house-hunting in a new hometown.
Come Saturday, Bryant will be in San Francisco, where the NBA’s 14th overall pick will make his Spurs debut in the team’s summer league opener against Miami at the California Classic.
That, Bryant said, will be by far the best part of his week.
“It’s basketball,” said Bryant, a former Arizona standout. “The ball goes in the hoop the same way. You play the same exact way. You have to treat it the same as you treat it your whole life. Just enjoying the game, having fun.”
The Spurs are set to play three games in San Francisco, with additional games scheduled against the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers at the Chase Center.
It serves as an appetizer to the summer’s main course, the sprawling 30-team Las Vegas Summer League that begins play late next week.
With that in mind, here are five story lines to watch as the Summer Spurs take the floor Saturday:
1. When will Dylan Harper debut?
But first a storyline not to watch in San Francisco. Harper, the No. 2 pick in last month’s NBA draft, has been ruled out of the California Classic due to what the team has termed a minor groin issue.
Harper will travel with the Summer Spurs to the Bay Area this week, but is not expected to make his debut in silver and black until the Las Vegas Summer League that opens July 10.
When that happens, it instantly becomes must-see TV for Spurs fans. Harper is one of the most highly anticipated draft picks in Spurs history, and he is poised to show why.
2. Can Bryant live up to Sean Elliott comparisons?
The Spurs’ other lottery pick, meanwhile, is set to show out in San Francisco. Bryant has drawn comparisons to former Spurs great Sean Elliott — including from Elliott himself — and it is only partially because both players spent their college careers at Arizona.
Like Elliott, the 6-foot-7 Bryant arrives with a smooth shooting stroke and a defensive presence that could be his ticket to quick playing time in the NBA.
Having spent only one season at Arizona, and as a bench player to boot, Bryant does not come with the deep resume Elliott owned as the No. 3 overall pick in 1989. Still, the Spurs believe with proper seasoning, Bryant can in time develop into an integral part of what they are building around Victor Wembanyama.
That starts this week in California.
3. Is Riley Minix an NBA-caliber shooter?
As of yet, the Spurs haven’t done much through free agency to address their roster’s lack of perimeter shooting. That opens an Summer League opportunity for Minix, a 6-7 gunner who spent last season on a two-way contract with the Spurs.
Minix’s rookie season was a disappointment, but not by his own making. The former Morehead State standout appeared in one game at the NBA level, playing seven minutes of a Nov. 6 loss against Houston without making a shot.
Minix managed to play three games with the G-League’s Austin Spurs, where he made 46.7% of his 3-point tries, before going down with a torn labrum in his left shoulder that required season-ending surgery.
In the final stages of his recovery, Minix is not expected to play with the Summer Spurs in San Francisco. As with Harper, the team is hopeful Minix could take the floor in Las Vegas.
A good showing during the summer could pave Minix’s way back to San Antonio, where his specific skill set — dead-eyed shooting — is sorely lacking.
4. Can Summer League coach Mike Noyes use his UConn connections to lure Stephon Castle?
The short answer to this question is definitely not.
After his Rookie of the Year campaign, Castle has been relieved of official duties with the Spurs’ summer squad. Castle has been practicing with the summer leaguers, however, much to the delight of coach Mike Noyes.
Noyes, the Spurs’ director of player development, graduated from Connecticut in 2017, seven years before Castle came and left the Huskies program.
Those connections weren’t enough to get Castle on the floor for Noyes’ Summer League team, but the squad has enjoyed having him around as a practice partner nonetheless.
San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) throws out t-shirts to fans following the Spurs’ last game of the season at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, April 13, 2025. Following his NBA Rookie of the Year season, Castle has been staying loose and working out the Spurs Summer League team despite not being on its roster.
5. Will Harrison Ingram make any sort of leap?
The other member of the Spurs’ 2024 draft class, Ingram, was largely forgotten during his rookie season.
Drafted 48th overall out of North Carolina, the 6-6 Ingram appeared in five NBA games last season, making his debut during the same Nov. 6 loss to the Rockets that saw Minix make his debut.
Ingram was otherwise solid as a combo forward in the G League, averaging 12.8 points and 9.5 rebounds in 32 appearances with Austin.
As the Spurs’ roster improves, spots on it will be at a premium. Now is the time for Ingram to show he belongs.
